Well the toyota let me down the other day. Driving it from work because my truck was in the shop getting a heater core installed. I notice a strange sound then white smoke pouring out the back. I pulled over to see what the hell just went on popped the hood No water in it.. So now i need a head gasket replaced. I have no time or do I want to do it myself. Putting it on here to see if any NC4x4ers would like to earn some money. I will be getting it done next week .. It NEVER over heated ! :wheel:

unfortunately, you may find that the head is also cracked as well. Toyota temp gauges are pretty slow to respond, and sometimes stick ( had this happen twice ) in the usual spot where you always see the needle sit when at operating temp.

I hope I'm wrong, but brace yourself for that possibility.

My '85 Runner temp gauge actually worked pretty well, the on in my '87 truck, well, I cooked 2 heads on that truck, it never read hot. The '85, when the temps were freezing, you could watch the thermostat open and close as the gauge raised and lowered as the temp fluctuated. was kinda weird to watch. even after I blocked half the radiator it did it ( outside temp was 8°F in Illinois at X-mas one year )

If I were closer I'd certainly entertain the job, done many of them.

Look closely around the exhaust seats on 2 and 3 cyls, thats the most common place, but 1 and 4 are also suspect.

If you do need to spring for a head, I'd research the rebuilder if at all possible, see if they have had many issues and what their warranty is.

I had one rebuilt head drop an exhaust seat ( not properly installed ) on the cyl that had been repaired.

if it's a worthy engine, I've popped for the LC Engineering NEW heads in the past, spendy, yes it is..... but I didn't have any issues after the fact...

Its not that hard of a job. I think you can do it. Besides, you will learn a whole lot about your truck doing it yourself. If not, I could do it.

Jon I have no I have no idea how many of these heads I worked on when I worked in the machine shop. As said, good possibility that it's cracked. Not always the easiest to see, so spring for the pressure check when you take it off. I also recommend having it surfaced. Most all aluminum heads are not long flat after they have been run. I think IIRC spec is .004 or .006

Good luck, I hope it's just the gasket

I have bought a couple of 22r/re heads of ebay that are new not refurbed. Come with a warranty and ready to install cam and all!

4.3 chevy.

I'll do it if it hasn't been taken anywhere yet.
