My daughter is looking to get a Toyota Highlander and asked me what was better, the Front Wheel Drive or the All Wheel Drive. I don't know about new stuff but reviews online look good for the vehicle. I don't usually like AWD because they make them too complex. Shes not going off road... I'm answering my own question...lol
Your input is appreciated still!

If snow or off road isn't a concern definitely get fwd. Awd is just more parts to break and fuel burnt for no reason. Plus it makes some repairs more expensive because labor times because the awd crap is in the way. Other than that they're pretty good vehicles, don't usually see them at work for anything but routine maintenance occasional starter or alternator, etc. I work at an independent shop.

AWD would be better for all weather driving, BUT, when you buy tires, you should replace all 4 ( most tire shops won't let you get around this ) keeping a matching set of tires size, brand and wear wise is important for the longevity of the AWD system, and handling can be effected as well.

Collage kid on a limited income a FWD would be better, for maint. and repair reasons.

AWD will cost more upfront as well.

What year range are we talking? Mother in law has an 05ish Highlander, and it is the biggest rolling blind spot I've ever seen. No other complaints, but the visibility is truly terrible for an SUV of that generation. Its FWD, and drives fine. Every vehicle I own is 4wd, so I'd opt for the AWD personally. You never see someone sitting there stuck saying "man, I'm glad I saved that $$$$", but most people don't need 4wd 99% of the time. The 1% is what I pay for (and resale value I suppose).

Guess you've never driven an FJ Cruiser...

Yup. We have one as an office loaner. 200k on it, but I'm not really a fan. Toyotas are designed for short people.

The wife has a 2012 Limited and absolutely loves it, says she doesn't want any other car for a very long time. We've not had any issues with it whatsoever. I love it as well, drives great and is a really comfortable ride.

I have to agree with Jeepinmatt it does have some blind spots

HUH ? Maybe a Prius or Corrola,

I've not had much issue in the ones I drive 4Runner, Camry and Tacoma, no more or less room than anything else I have to wear as a backpack.....

Highlander doesn't have a telescoping wheel or adjustable pedals. So I either don't have enough leg room or I can't reach the wheel.

Maybe you have monkey arms?
