i noticed when riding around in the snow today, that the left side locking hub on my 88 toyota was making a some noise sporadically in 4x4 and 4x2. when i unlocked it i didn't hear it. it was kind of a grinding noise, what are yall's thoughts??

just from the info you'd given, the hub is working, you do have 4x4, but when the hub is engaged, either 2 or 4wheel drive, you hear noise.

Tells me that there is an issue in the CV axle. by best guess is that the bushing thru the spindle that the stub of the cv shaft rides in is worn, or has debris in it. the CV shafts only turn if the hubs are locked in ( when in 2wheel drive )

grab the outer bell of the outer CV joint, see how much play you have. it is possible as well that the bolt INSIDE the hub that keeps the CV stub from walking back and forth in the hub is either loose or missing.
