Toyota locking hub reassembly issue

I went to change the caliper on the front driver on my 87 4x4 toyota pickup, and for some reason though I had to take the hub off to get to it. I realized what I didn't have to after taking just a few bolts off, not disassembling it completely. I realized that the 12mm bolt that goes into the end of the axle shaft was loose since the last time we took it apart for brake work and has messed up the threads on the bolt and on the inside of the axle shaft some. What does this bolt do? I can't figure out what it's supposed to hold. Nothing behind the bolt is loose and come out, so I'm confused. Any suggestions? Can I leave this bolt out maybe for now? I just need the truck back on the road for now.

Anyone in North Raleigh that can stop by and lend a hand to figure this out? I'm not sure what to do.

bolt

It keeps the birfield shaft splines pulled into the hub splines. I am assuming you are still IFS. If so, I would chase the threads and put it back.

Yeah, I was able to get another bolt from the store to fit into it and hold snug. Had to stack a couple washers to get the height of the original washer, but it works.

But yeah, I am still stock IFS.

that should be fine...as long as it keeps the CV shaft out tight.
