Has anyone on here installed a painless harness in a land cruiser? I'm trying to install one in a neighbors 78 fj40 and am stuck when it comes to wiring the alternator up. I've looked at several different schematics and numerous post and threads on numerous boards, but none help at all. They all just say buy an internally regulated alternator.

There is a reason for that

The externaly regulated were a pain at best to keep working, and then really didn't produce much power to begin with.

The internaly regulated are SIMPLE and EASY to hook up, I've converted a few forklifts

Oh, and the externally regulated require more wiring harness and connection, as there are wires going to several different sources.

Yes, I do realize that's why they suggest to switch over.

What's involved in switching over? I may be able to talk him into just swapping it to a one pole alt.

putting in a newer gm cs style alt is pretty simple. The energizer/exciter wire from the harness goes to the L terminal, the wire from the S terminal goes to the output terminal of the alt, and the output goes directly back to the batt with at least a 10ga wire.

This should give you a 105 amp alt that is good for about 55amp just off idle.

search the IH8mud forums for more info on fj alt mods

Ah ok, I wasn't sure if the CS style alternator was the correct one.

I recommend you NOT getting a 1-wire alternator, a regular delco internally regulated alternator will be much better.

Can you point me in the right direction to the correct alternator? Thanks.

What are your requirements ?

Winch ? Lighting? Aux lighting ? sound ? air compressor ? The more electrical goodness, the more power needed.

What is the vehicles intended purpose ? Stock resto would be fine running 55amp stock style Denso Alt, simple 4 wire hook up, internally regulated.

add more toys, amperage requirments go up, which changes Alt choices

I was able to run a winch and a pair of 55watt lights with stock 55amp Denso alt.

It wasn't happy about it, it got hot a few times, but it never did smoke. but then, I was also very mindful of how the power was used and had generious wiring to cope.

I've got an alt that would work VERY well for this, it was on my LC. Pulled it when I got the LS engine.

1 wire to 12v+ switched, 1 8-10 gauge to the battery. Done.

It's a Bosch delta-wound. high amperage.

$50. Drops right in in place of the 10si-type alt's that I see on LC's.

I'm not familiar with the different alternators that come with the fj's, so is the one I've got a 10si? I'm headed back up to North Raleigh today to work on this so I might swing by and pick it up sometime this afternoon if it'll drop right in.

10si is the alternator that was on most all GM trucks in the 70's & 80's.

The cruiser has some Nippon-denso 40 amp alt. most likely, but I'm talking about doing a conversion to a GM alt, which is popular. look at the Ih8mud.com tech section for more info.

The alt. is currently in Sanford, but I can get it back up here...

Actually, thanks anyways. We went to autozone and bought one for 60 new.
