Would appreciate any help pointing to a good write up on a rear disc conversion for toyota pickup. Have an 88 rear axle with an 85 solid front with IFS brakes. Don't need an e brake as I have installed the All pro transfer case parking brake.
Which master cylinder would be best ? Some say the FJ master cylinder but I heard that some of the new pickup master cylinders were the same 1" bore as the FJ one and a third of the price.
I found a couple of write ups on Pirate but was not sure which was the best way to go.
Thanks

The newer pickup Master cylinder will work (I think). I have been "Eye Balling" the Tacoma Master Cylinder also. I think the bolt pattern is the exact same. It looks just like the FJ Master Cylinder. http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/ and look under Toyota/ then Suspension, and scroll about 3/4 down the page.

Not sure on a link for the brakes, but the master cylinder is an easy swap. Either use a Tacoma MC, not sure what size bore they are, or the LC MC. If the Tacoma one will work, I think I have one that is in good shape that I would sell for cheap.

OR you can put a Chevy 1-ton MC on it. The MC would cost about $15-$20 (reman), and an adapter plate can be made out of some 1/2" thick steel and a couple studs, pretty easy to do. You also will need a couple adapters to change to metric lines. I think the bore on the Chevy MC might be 1 1/4" but I'm not sure. I had one on my Tacoma w/ 1-tons and 4 wheel disc brakes and it would lock up all 4 tires.

Thanks for the info.
After much searching I managed to find this post for a "HOW TO" brake swap on Pirate http://www.webercomputing.net/~aweber/truck/brakes.htm
also found a good thread on pirate for a guy who did the swap and had problems with the rear's overpowering the front's

Finally decided his brake booster was bad.
It looks like the brackets are available from Sky manufacturing as well as conversion stainless brake lines:

All Pro has a conversion kit for $499 but I think you could piece your own kit together for half that using Sky Manufacturing brackets.

You will still need a new Master Cylinder with 1" bore and looks the the Tacoma MC may be the ticket and is the same as the FJ-80 MC. Looks like you will need a dual diaphram brake booster if your truck does not have one.
I think machining is still required on the rotors in order to fit the rear axles. I will probably just have to pull the axle and try.
Anyone have a closeup pic of what and how much machining on the rotor ?
I will do a detailed write up when I do the conversion

when i had my minitruck, i was using the parts from sky....not going to find a better price for parts that you can paint and bolt on in one day. I would consider getting the rotors from him also (prices is a little higher but they have already been turned to fit over the yota axle. I bet if you buy the hubs and find a local machine shop to turn them it will end up being more)

When i did my i remove the factory valve on the frame wheel and went with a manual preportion valve and a residual valve from wilwood. Not much extra and should help.

On pirate search for toywelder he has a setup that uses stock yota staright axle stuff in the rear. Cool way to get rid of your rotors and calipers. The brakets are around 90.00. I'm doing this setup now and will post up pictures when I get it complete.
