I have a rattling noise coming from what sounds to be my transfer case.
It only makes this noise at speed 20+mph during a nuteral coast with the clutch depressed, in nuteral clutch released or at a nuteral rpm while driving. No noise while under acceleration or coasting in gear. It does seem to be related to speed.

vehicle is an 82 pickup, w56, single rf1a t-case with 4.70 gears .The noise seamed to get worse after the w56 was swapped in, but was there before the swap.

So far I have checked u joints front and rear, the front shaft is kind of sloppy so pulled that, checked pinion nut and flange nuts on the tcase to be sure they are tight. I'm not really sure what else to look for at this point without pulling the t-case.

Anyone have any suggestions or any ideas on what could be causing this?

In neutral only makes me think it is gear issue. Excess slop in the gears when in neutral, but when the teeth are engaging with some torque the sound is gone.
my thoughts also, but would the gears themselves wear? Or worn bearings causing an alignment issue? It's quiet as can be under load.

Yes and yes, but usually there latter causes the first. I would pull the rear driveshaft with it in 2wd and trans in gear and get a feel for the play in it. If it's a lot I'd pull the case to investigate more.

I'll pull it this week and check it out. Should I be looking for rotational Play, up and down play or both?

I'd look for all kinds of play just to find where the issue is.

Did you check the nut that holds the output flanges on?

So I'm bumping this back up.
I've pulled the tcase and swapped it in for a stock spare case. The noise is still there. It's almost a chattering noise.
Are there any known problems with a w56 trans that would cause this?
It was making this noise before I swapped the trans in, but I have no clue what else could be causing this.
