Ok I got a 89 Toyota pickup 22re, the motor has been completely rebuilt stock intake obx header , and for a while it was running fine, and about 6 months ago the problems started first it was the surging idle which ended up being a stuck iacv which I had another complete upper manifold I slapped it on there and it was fine for a while the surging stopped, that was back in the summer now that it's gotten cold the truck will take a good 3-5 minutes of turning over hit a few times shut off that's over and over again until it hits and takes off and idles fine and it runs fine
Now as of yesterday it started idling low and missing like crazy and the idle will pickup and drop spratically I have tried to adjust the dist timing, the idle air, replaced the cap rotor plugs, I've swapped the whole throttle body out, the air flow meter, and it will not idle or run right it will idle low and miss and sound like it's dying then if you hit the throttle a couple times it sounds great for a minute or two then it drops back down, now I can unplug their flow meter and the truck will idle fine like there's nothing wrong and it sound the best it ever has but when I plug it up it goes back to sounding like crap and I know the meters are good I pulled and installed them on my d/d so if anyone has any ideas you input is greatly appreciated it's probably something simple and stupid I'm overlooking but any help is welcome thanks

check the rubber boots between the AFM and the throttle body, they crack in the bellows and suck air that is not metered by the AFM. causes erratic idle issues, probably not the whole problem, but some where to start ( 24 year old rubber tends to crack and crumble )

Yea the elbow of the the throttle body actually froze up a couple months ago so I just replaced the whole piece and when I tried the other afm I just took the whole assy off the other truck tube and all

Ok so I checked the boot again it's good so today I took off the throttle body and separated the iacv cleaned them both every port on the TB and IACV kept coating the iacv got them both shiny cleaned the coolant ports put it back on and now the truck starts fine but it still won't idle normal it drops low and misses then eventually dies, driving it runs good a little weaker but it runs good so I'm wondering if maybe this sounds like an egr problem? I've never had any issues with it but I'm giving serious thought to just blocking it off and getting rid of everything with it to eliminate it all together thoughts on completely removing it? And where would I get all of the plugs for the vac ports

It sounds like there may be a couple different problems. Have you checked the TPS sensor? Google 4crawler TPS. There is a good writeup on how to ohm out a TPS to check it and to adjust it. Put a timing light on it to make sure the timing is right. My EGR was stuck open for the longest time due to carbon buildup. I deleted it along with a bunch of other stuff. Check the hoses for the PAIR system (the black stuff under the upper intake).

The troublesome part to me is you say that when you unhook the MAF wires, it runs fine. When you unhook that, the computer goes into closed loop and runs off a predetermined setting. This tells me that one or more sensors are getting something they dont like.

Yea I checked the tps it's measured out good and also the ign coil and as far as the MAF since I cleaned the throttle body and iacv it hasn't done that again

As far as the timing goes it has to be set at about 10-15 degrees before tdc to run once I get it too 0 it drops to barley idling missing and eventually dying

Coolant sensor. My truck did same thing a few years back. Top off radiator and then run with cap off for a few minutes. Prolly an air bubble in the line going to throttle body.

So the coolant sensor on the lower intake manifold? It caused the truck to run that bad not idling and the timing issue and all??

Ok so I replaced the coolant temp sensor that helped so apparently that was going bad now the truck will start after a few turns and sounds great until it gets warm, now I re-timed it I can get it dead on 0 now and it will idle but it's running so rich it's horrible you can smell and see it and it sounds like a drag car and now were back too if I unplug the afm it leans out and runs great and stops missing and the check engine is on and I'm showing a lean code any ideas???

Sounds like you have some unmetered air or a bad sensor causing the lean code and telling it to dump more fuel. Have you tried another known good afm?

Does anyone happen to know the part# for the denso o2 sensor there's about 47 billion at autozone and the one in mine had the part number of a v6, 89 22re non California
