Toyota Starting Problem

I have an 88 toyota pick up with the 22re in it. Went and played in the mud pretty hard this weekend and once I got done cleaned pretty much everything underneath the truck and the engine pretty good. Now I have a problem. When I go out ot start the truck sometimes it will fire right up, and other times it will give me just one click and nothing, but once I bump the key again it will fire up. Its not the normal starter clicking noise when it goes out. Its just a single click and then I can start it up again. Any ideas, I cleaned the battery terminals b/c I know yotas are picky bout that and checked my connections to the starter. So any more ideas. Thanks in advance

yep. what he said

NOTORIOUS problem, DON'T replace the starter with one from AZ, AA or anywhere else, they are JUNK !!

Pull the starter, the contacts are in the solinoid housing, pull the cover off, the contacts are on each side. You can buy them from the dealer for about $25 OR read link below.....

scroll to the top of the page, read and learn, check out the whole site, very good and useful info.

^^ agree w/ what he said on not getting an AZ reman replacement. I'm on #3.
It's also possible that the ignition switch is dying and the little copper contacts aren't always making a good enough connection for the starter solenoid to pull the full 12v (and like 40 amps) through it to allow its full action. On the 4Crawler page linked above it has some suggestions about this. That thing is not hard to replace (it unbolts from the bottom of the key cylinder).
If you really think the hard wheeling is related, then be sure to check the main line going from the battery to the starter, make sure oyu have a really good contact on the staeter end.
However if you are not hearing the full click of the solenoid engaging then that's not the problem (solenoid gets its juice from the ignition switch, not that beefy starter line).

Oh! On that note - make sure the incoming signal lien ot the solenoid has a good connection. The wire there is kind of thin and might be a bit loose from yer previous fun...

Hate to admit it (being a toyota parts manager), but I put a advance starter on my 87 15 months ago and I've already had to replace it (I didn't have one in stock the day I put the motor back in). Stay w/ factory and just replace the contacts, I sell them for 28.00 a set and on your rig they would be a piece of cake.

Remove contacts, heat the bend with a propane torch and flatten. Put in vise, heat bend again and bend the other way. Will leave you with two clean contacts for another 50k miles. Sorry parts sellers.

Some of the contacts are offset w/ a left or right leg, so this may not work. But it's worth a shot! I never thought of trying that.

Is this a pretty universal starter fix? The wife's 2SFE '89 Celica has been doing the same thing on and off for a while now..

in specific it is a Nippondenso (Toy) starter issue, but I have seen other makes have similar issues, I used to clean the contacts on my old Pontiac about every other month, it was never fixed by just replacing the parts, as it would continue to happen ( one reason I haven't owned an American car since)

I carry 3 Nippondenso repalcement starters on my service van, if that is any indication how often it is an issue. If they would let me, I'd just carry the contacts, and actually repair the existing starter, but thats too easy and cheap.
