I have a customers 86 DX pickup 2wd 22re auto. Truck runs rough, searches for idle speed and has a misfire up until 2k rpm. I have checked for vaccum leaks using a smoke machine, cleaned the egr, checked the cap and rotor plug wires and replaced the plugs. Old plugs were not fuel fouled but covered in carbon as well as the 02 sensor. Ran new pcm grounds direct to battery. What typically would cause this type of problem? Bad MAF? I am at a loss and have no way to check codes because the battery was disconnected. ANY HELP/ ADVISE would be great!

Don't kno the answer but be sure to post it when you figure it out. I've had a similar issue a few times after the engine has been wet that ends up fixing it's self. Make sure there isn't any moisture in the diagnostic port.

Sounds crazy, but while it is running tap MAF you are looking for any change in the running. Also you can pull the MAF off and check that the door inside is moving free. There also may be an injector or cold start injector problem. If you have a leak down tester , I would do that as well.

Check fuel pump relay and fuel pump you can jump the relay under the hood to make sure it's not the problem there known to cause simaler problems

Turns out the MAF sensor was bad. The little door and motor took a crap while it was in the body shop for 3 months. The door got stuck and presumably burnt up the motor thanks guys for the input!
