So here's my dilemma. I have a forward shift case from a w56 tranny that has 4.7 gears in it. I'm wanting to put these gears in my 81 pickup which has the l45 tranny in it. There is no hole in that tranny to accept a forward shift case. Can I swap out the top shift rails in that forward shift case, or would I be better of just swapping the 4.7 gears into the top shift case.

you can swap the shift rails and the high/low shift fork into a forward shift and make it a top shift. If you don't have a set of rails marlin crawler and I think trail gear both sell a top shift conversion kit, which is rails and shift fork.

I have the shift rails from the top shift case that came out of the 81. I'm putting in twin sticks too if that makes any difference...

Man, just look at the instructions to do the swap. It looks just as easy to swap the gears! You've got to pull the entire case apart either way.
