I have a 1981 toyota 4x4 that i have been working on for a while and now just getting to the motor and trans. Never paid to much attention to the trans like i should but i got the truck for cheap so whatever i thought. I knew it needed the transmission shifter bushing because it had ALOT of play, like 3-4" of play. I crunk the truck up today and ran perfect. I tryed to shift it into gear and it wouldnt budge but still had the terrible play. The trans case was in nutural and the hubs was not locked. I let off the clutch and it took off but would not shift gears???? Do you think that it might be the shifter bushing and seat causing it not to shift or something else???? An also is there anyway that i can check to see if its something inside the trans.

Pull the boot and check to make sure the shifter is in it correctly. When I had my shifter out to swap everything from one truck the the other I out the shifter in and it wouldn't move at all. turned out to only be in one shift fork and not both. (When you pull the shifter and look inside you'll see what I mean.)

Check what rattlecan said about the forks, for not shifting. As far as the slop in the shifter replace the 2 bushings part #'s 33505-35020 and 33548-31010 (factory Yota numbers).

ok, today i was going to take the shifter out.... i took the 4 bolts out of the shifter housing that was holding the shifter in...it moved back and was loose but it would not come out???? Does anybody no what im doing wrong here???? I was reading my chilton manual for the truck and it had the L-series transmission assembly broke down into sections but never really explained how to just take the shifter out. Is it like the newer trans that has restricter pins in the side that may hold the shifter in place or what??? Need help, build almost completed and i need to get it going.....THX IN ADVANCE AND FOR THE EARLIER POST!!!!!

i found out that it did have restrictor pins on both sides, i couldnt tell because of all the mud in there.....now yet another problem...i got the pins to come out about a .25" on both sides....the one on the left side WONT come out, an the one on the other side, i accidentally broke it off, NOW WHAT, ANYBODY, ANY SUGGESTIONS?

anybody?

Anybody know anything that i can do......? I really dont wont to drop trans just to get the shifter out.......

Trans in neutral? That's where it needs to be to get the shifter out.

Those old L series tranny shifters are a bitch. I recommend upgrading to a G or W series and be done with it.

thanks for everyones help but its a NO GOOD.... The trans is in nutruel , and i pushed down on the retainer and twisted, beat, poked, jabed and everything else but its just not working..... If i knew someone could get that thing out i would pay them to get it out because it keeps looking more and more like either dropping the trans or taking the body off to be able to get to it easier.... keep rolling with the suggestions though, they are much APPRECIATED !!!!!!:beer:

and yea if i had the money or could find a cheap enough tranny i would upgrade

Bolt the bolts back up. Pull up the boot and look at the top of the shifter. It will look like a d shape ring that you have to give a quater turn and the shifter will pull striaght out the top....

Which way would you turn it, clockwise or counter clockwise?

OK PEOPLE, finally got that shifter out!!!! Thank GOD. It is wore down drastically... now that i replaced the seat and bushing and also a good condition shifter it will not shift.... it is stuck in a gear and i dont know which one?????? Has the tranny went out????? I was told it was a 5 speed from the guy i bought it from but it turned out to be a 4 speed. Someone told me that a 1981 yota has the 4 speed. I was told that it was a 1982 and it was 5 speed but turned out to be a 81 with 4 speed. I checked the vin's. Thats just my luck i guess but anyways what do yall think could be wrong with the transmission? I was told it could be the forks but i have no idea on how to begin to check them. The way it looked to me is that it had one fork that connected to the ball at the end of the shifter. But anyways any advice would be greatly APPRECIATED !!! Thx in advance....

Oh yea and thx to all that helped me with my struggle and i will post pics as soon as i can to show you how wore out the original 29 year old shifter was...lmfao

Still need help, it wont shift out of gear and i know nothing about a transmission. I took it out again and it looks like it only has one big fork with a hole in it that the end of the shifter at the ball just slides in the single fork????? Anybody know what i should look for?????

Try pushing the clutch in while shifting. I know it shouldn't really matter, but maybe the extra looseness in the whole setup will help. Though it's looking more and more like it's time for a new tranny.
