i got a 83 toyota, 22r, carb. this motor has broken 3 timing chain sets n the last 2 years. the crank gear has been the problem. i put whole new set n it last september and jus broke today. i cant figure out y it keeps breaking the bottom gear and not the chain. it not getting oil or sumthing cuz it does have a leak, that be it? any input will be greatly appreciated.

Wow, never heard of them breaking. Usually the plastic guides break. Where are you getting them? Get an enginebuilder.com set with the steel backed guides.

I'm not sure how the oiling sys on the 22R motors work but if it's not getting oil that could be a factor. Bad parts can be also. Stuff like that get quailty stuff or you can end up changing them alot. I'd clean the oil sys out good, fix the leak and get a quailty set and go from there. Also if any of the two gears are bent a little that will put a side load on the chain and cause it too break as well.

when you say it's breaking, what do you mean exactly? Like the gear is breaking into pieces? Teeth chipping off?
That is very strange, this is not a typical failure at all.
Do you have other evidence of an oil problem?

Ive never heard of an issue like that on a 22r. Sounds like the chain is binding up or a gear isnt straight. If it was an oiling problem I would think the engine would be toast by now. Redneck92 put it best...good parts, cflush out the oil system, and fix the leak. After that I would start looking at an issue with the crank itself.

May want the check the crank thrust. If the crank is moving in and out of the block that would run the chain more on the sides and crack the gear near the keyway. Just a thought.
