How long can you ride on a tank of fuel in the trails?

I have a 360 AMC in my cj with a MC 2100 2brl carb in my jeep and it does terrible. I ran out 12 gallons in URE on Sunday. I didnt really run it that hard. I think ill be looking into a bigger fuel cell.

Yeah, 36's, 4.6 stroker, I can fill up before I hit the trails, ride one evening and all the next day, then drive back to charlotte on the same tank (about 15 gallons).

dang man.. I can drive there (40 minutes) ride all day out there and drive home on my 15 gallon tank and 304. when I had 3.54s, T-18 and 32's.

I used to do the same thing with the same setup, but now it drinks the fuel. Im going to pull the carb and do another rebuild. Hopefully thatll help.

not to be a smart ass, but check for leaks.
You are approaching the max flow rate of the carb at those numbers.

Im not sure an engine dumping that much fuel would even run.

Id be looking into: leaks, siphon theif, malfunctioning gas pump

That sounds about right. I have a 360 in my cj with an Eldebrack 4 barrel. Auto tranny and 410 gears with 35's. I drove to Siler City this morning from Burlington ( about 30 miles each way) and I used about 3/4 of a tank of gas. I would hate to see what a trip to the beach would do to my wallet!

I filled up while the jeep was on the trailer, trailered it to ure and was in it the whole time. It did spew a little out of the vent, but nothing else. It was running rich enough to foul a set of plugs while on the trail though.

Or a smaller motor :) I rode everything at Tellico and Harlan, two weekends, rode a workday at URE and still have gas in my tank!

That would be nice, but I really like the sounds that the flowmaster put out. On the other hand if I cant afford to put gas in this pos maybe I should put a 4banger in it. :driver:

Do AMC fuel pumps have issues like Chevy's if the mechanical pump diaphragm tears, and pumps gas into the crankcase?

Just a question... Due you run around in low range all of the time?

I usualy run my in low range but leave it in Drive unless I need to keep it in low. of course I have a SBC TBI

360's are not known for thier gas sipping properties.

I am pretty sure it is the same pump.
Same potential issue, diaphram tears, pump bowl fills and gas spills past pump pushrod right in to crankcase

A long day at URE and I will burn about 6 gallons of gas. 360 with Howell TBI.

Thats a good question. Ill check into that tonight.

I ran most of the day in low range but in 3rd or 4th gear. I am sure something is wrong in the fuel system. Ill check tonight and update what I find Out. :bounce:

Yes, I'm bringing this thread back from the dead. :flipoff2:
I am curious if you ever found a problem, or if it is just a case of a thirsty 360!
Anyone else have any insight into this as well?
Thanks in advance...

Yeah i found the problem, when my dumbass rebuilt the carb i had the accelerator pump in bacwards. It was spewing fuel into the carb at idle. Flipped it around and havent had a bit of trouble since. I can ride all day now on about 5-6 gallons of gas, and thats riding wide open most of the time too.

My 304 has never ever got better than 10mpg on the road (short hops & 100+ miles trips). Trail mileage hasn't been much better... without a working gauge, I've learned to top it off after each day.

Hoping to swap on a TBI system shortly to see what that does. Besides ditching the inconstant starts & better off-camber running, a little more efficiency can't be a bad thing!

When i did drive mine on the road, i dont think it did too bad, polly like 15 or so mpg. But that was with a 304 3 speed and 355 gears. Im pretty happy with it now, i can wheel pretty much a weekend on a tank of gas. Now brad4046 on here has a 4cyl yj, that has had 2 sets of axles and 2 sets of wheels and tires, about 4 or 5 uwharrie trips on the same tank of gas. Its pretty awesome!
