The Big Dixie Boggers is a club based in Charlotte, Lake Norman and Hickory, NC.
"The Sickest Off-Road Club on the East Coast - Go Big or Go Home Baby!!!"
This is a guest post from Deanna Poplin, a member of the Big Dixie Boggers.
A few of the Big Dixie Boggers, and some other fellow wheelers, decided to spend their 3 day weekend at Gulches ORV Park in Laurens, SC. The park offers trails (that range from 'easy' to 'triple black'), various competitions, campsites, lunch, and beautiful scenery including a river that runs beside the park. The group decided to set up camp at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Clinton, SC, where the staff had good hospitality and accommodated to all of their needs, including parking for the rigs and trailers.
They arrived at Gulches 10am Saturday morning where Skip Wilkinson, the park owner, was waiting for them with a smile. After they got unloaded they decided Miller, a Gulches veteran, in his XJ was going to be trail leader for the day. Skip's last word to the Boggers before they went in the woods was "Don't break anything before lunch so I can ride with you guys!". Their first stop was "Trail 7", which is a newly modified trail with a rock ledge with a rock pile above it. There are many lines to choose from but, with the park being dry, everyone made the obstacle with ease.
From there the wheelers moved on to "Heartbreaker" which involves a lot of twisting and flexing, and the turning of a few RPM's. They then conquered the trails "Radical Ravine" and "Shipwreck".
It was then about 1pm which means lunchtime at Gulches. When they returned to the parking lot for a lunch break Skip had $3 hamburgers, $2 hotdogs, $1 chips and $1 cold drinks waiting for them. This a much better alternative than going through the hassle of buying and packing drinks/food etc. and way cheaper!
After all bellies were full the gang went back in to the woods to attempt trails "3D", which is a 45 degree angle hill climb with rock ledges between you and the top, and their favorite trail "Papa Gulch". Only Paul in his 78 CJ7 on 37" Creepy's and Scott a.k.a. OlJeeps in his Jeep-based buggy on 36" TSL's were able to make it through with no winching or use of a spotter's rope.
The group returned to the park Sunday to conquer more trails. The only damage they encountered were Paul's and Justin's broken axles and Joel's broken spring hanger on his YJ. The group had all types of rigs, everything from Mark, a MudDevil member in his buggy with 44" tires, to Brad, a Rock Corps member in his JK with 33" tires and one locker. You will not find a ORV park in the south that has a better view or a better staff! Where else can you go and the actual park owner cook for you, and ride the trails with you!
Videos and more photos can be found in the Past Events thread for this trip.
The Big Dixie Boggers will host the Fall Event at The Farm on October 29, 30 and 31.
