Was looking at trailers on ebay, and one guy (in SC) had this posted in his ad. is it true? does it affect NC, or our neighboring states?
"CAUTION! It is ILLEGAL to pull a tandem axle trailer with brakes on ONLY one axle in 33 of the 50 states. The trailer and the cargo can be impounded until you replace the idler axle if you are caught. Worse is the fact that if you have an accident you may be pulling an illegal trailer, and even if the law is not being enforced, the insurance companies can be unforgiving when an accident vehicle is illegal."

Yes, that is true. It has to do with the weight of the trailer unloaded as to weather or not brakes are required on both axles. If you are buying a new trailer definately get one with brakes on both.

I've got single brakes on an 18' trailer and it works just fine. Purchased like that brand new about 2 years ago.

Not a problem in NC. Don't know about other states though.

I've got a double axle trailer for sale with brakes on both. (shameless plug)

PM me price and pics. I'm in the market.

Those sweetrivers trailers seem a little high to me. $2200 for a 16ft wood deck car trailer! jeez. I don't doubt they are good.

I found this tonight while searching around.

18ft for $1750 so a 16ft has to be cheaper right?

Trailer brakes are like money; you'll never regret having more than you need, but you may very well regret not having enough. The price difference between one braking axle and two is minimal, so just man up and do the right thing. You'll never regret having brakes on both axles.
