I'm planning on building a trailer and have a good idea of how to build the bed, but I was'nt sure on what to use for an axle. I don't plan to pull cars or anything on it, just a four wheeler and a lawnmower. I saw one trailer that just have a piece or square tubing that had the wheel kits on it. Did'nt look to strong though, and I saw another that had what looked like a rear axle from a truck...and that looked kind of heavy duty. Any recommendations????

Use a D35. That's about all the load they're rated to carry. I was actually thinking about building a little trailer and using the ZJ rear link setup and coils since I already have most the parts here. My trailer would have better flex than anyones!

I use square tube for my axles. I just slide in the spindles and weld it up. Be sure to drill the tube and plug weld the spindle as well (in similar fashion as a tube insert).

I use square tube because its cheaper than pipe, its material I already have and use on the trailer (for tongue), and makes a nice flat surface to mount the leaf springs to. Of course I could get spring perches, but thats more $$$ to spend and more welding, etc. etc.

On some axles, depending on what i'm using them for, I go ahead and put a "crown" in the axle. This way, once the trailer is loaded down and the axles flexes, the tires are sitting straight up and down and ride nice. This is especially important if you use thin wall tube for the axle.

Its cheaper to do it yourself, much cheaper. But, sometimes its much easier to just buy the axle from Agri Supply, northern, etc.

I build mine because every axle I've seen has never been the measurements I have wanted

Saw a Leaf sprung 4 wheeler/utility trailer with new wiring and lights on Craigslist the other day. $300. Damn good deal! I was REAL tempted. you may look there.
