Trailer modification

My step dad’s trailer that I use when I go wheeling is getting redecked. It’s got some ground clearance issues by design so while the deck is off, we are flipping the axles so the trailer sits in line with our trucks better and we can actually get a WD hitch without 9 inches of drop. We are also cutting the ramps from underneath for better departure angle and welding in a winch mount in the front deck.

The question I’m having now is. I’d like to set the ramps into the rear deck and have them slope down towards the axles. To do this, I’ll have to cut out a section of the rear inner crossmember (not the back one but the next one) and notch the second one so the ramps will run under it. I have some 3x4 1/4” angle iron I was planning to run from the actual rear crossmember to the one that was notched to provide support for one that will be cut partially. Does anybody see any major issue with this plan? I’ve seen it done on a similar angle iron car trailer but don’t have any photos of how it was done. Just wanted to see what others might think.

Suggestion…. Rather than cutting and potentially impacting the integrity of the cross-beams of the trailer….

Redeck the trailer minus the area where the ramps will go. The ramps would lay flat under the trailered vehicle and also make for a full, functional deck. If needed, add some expanded metal to the top surface of the ramps so the trailer deck is relatively flat across the wood deck and ramps.

You can easily come up with a simple method of securing them (slide the front edge under a metal lip and snap rings or spring-loaded bolts at the rear.

Keeps the full deck functional
Avoids cutting the trailer structure
Makes the ramps easily accessed/ stowed and secured.
Adding full length rails along the ramp storage recess allows you to slide them in/out easily.

This is my backup idea. The ramps are made from C channel and will stick slightly above the Trailer deck is my main concern, but it should only be an inch-inch and a half so should be too big of an issue.
