Looking to get a trailer to tow a CJ to the trails. What are the laws in NC as I am from out of state?

Does the trailer have to be titled and registered?

Do you need insurance on the trailer or does your vehicle insurance cover the contents of the trailer and the trailer itself?

What if you have a trailer with no title, how do I get it registered and get a plate?

Thanks!

you need a plate and a registration.(so they can tax you)

You can get a title for it it involves you stamping numbers on it, and dancing with the DMV real slow like.

Vehicle insures trailer but not vehicle on trailer ie if it comes off and mangles some people it better be insured.

Got to run straps or chains on the axles.

Tow vehicle needs weighted plates- to cover tow rig, and loaded trailer weight(more taxes)

So what happens if I don't have weighted plates and I'm towing my junk? I'm not going to have a trailer of my own for a while, I'm just going to rent/borrow whatever until then.

Does a 3/4 ton Suburbn requrie a weighted tag? When I bought my first Suburban about 15 years ago, I told the DMV to add weight. They told me it was classified as a station wagon and ran a car tag and not a truck tag, so a weighted tag wasn't available.

Mike, no it doesn't, the statute states "cargo hauling vehicles" ie. trucks. We discovered this when we had the expedition.

you can get a permanent registration too for your trailer, there is a thread here you can search for it, around $80, good as long as you own the trailer.

interesting point, i've never thought about that. what's the best way to insure yourself in the event something does come off of a trailer? unregistered/uninsured vehicle, parts, etc.

having recently had a valuable lesson in the importance of good health and vehicle insurance from a wreck (luckily i did), i'm not taking any chances.

i've towed many many cars with a regular tag....this is the first time i've ever heard of it being illegal? i've been pulled a few times with a trailor on my dad's f150 too...never an issue???

Rob,
When we got the k2500 suburban to pull my trailer, We were told that it did in fact need weighted tags as it could haul cargo in the back??
Where is this info?? I have asked many troopers and DMV officers and could never really get a definitive answer??
Please advise me as my tags are due this month!!!!
Thanks

most troopers are not going to mess with you if you dont have a trailer, but some will. especially since shp and dmv are almost completely combined now. I first got my dually the dealer gave me the wrong tag and I got pulled running empty because I had a passenger tag. The trooper said they were starting to crack down on people running the wrong tags. most passenger tags are only rated at 4000lb's. the only thing that saved me was that i had the reciept were i had paid for the weighted tag. and it did NOT matter that I happened to be police.

This depends 100% on your insurance policy.

I'm covered for truck trailer and contents as long as I'm not doing it for compensation.

In this example. If it was my tow rig, a barrowed trailer, and my jeep ON the trailer. I'd definitely be covered.

This was during the whole RV, flat bed discussion I had with my agent. Basically they don't care what you do if its a personal vehicle roughly under the 3500/350 size designation. As soon as you attempt to be safer by using a bigger truck, you 'must' be running a business to need a truck that big and they get all concerned. I asked so if I pull a trailer weighing X on a 1/2ton they don't care as long as your not over any GVWR and or out of class (needing Class A etc). Basically not ticketable for mechanical/overloaded conditions.. other wise they could care less..

Bottom line, call your agent and tell them exactly what your doing and ask if your covered, if not ask about a 1 trip coverage, they can do all sorts of stuff like that for not much $$.

I have six trailers and two tags one for my enclosed trialers and one for my open trailers. I know it's wrong but nc sucks. If you can get it titled in SC life would be easier for you.

SO fill me in I may be able to help you out with your problem I work for the state. Whats so hard and bad about NC.

.

Yager, Whats covered? Are you Full covered?
So your Truck Ins will fix your trailer and Jeep if crashed?

Mine I'm covered for Liability only, anything on, in ,hooked to...
So something like truck, trailer, and blazer and a cooler comes off the trailer, kills a car frontend that was behind me, its covered. The truck, Trailer, and Blazer all have there own ins.
When I first got it like on the way home if a bad lane change and hit a car, the car would be covered under the truck ins. but the trailer would not it needs to have its own coverage, now I have that so the trailer would get repaired/replaced and its about 35-40 per year set on a fixed $ of trailer and addons.
