First of all yes, I searched the forum, the newest thread was from 2008. A friend of ours just gave us a 14 foot horse trailer (not homebuilt) but it does not have a title or any recognizable #’s on it as it has been passed down through family for years and the paperwork was misplaced years ago. It needs some work so it will not be on the road anytime soon but I would like to put a license plate on it eventually so it would be legit when we get it road ready. Have things changed since that last thread or do I just go to the DMV get the assigned number, stamp it, have the SHP inspect/sign off and, then take the paperwork back the DMV?

Just go to the DMV.

Do it soon. when i got a trailer inspected from Tennessee (they dont have titles for trailers) the DMV inspector said they are trying to do away with having to inspect and stamp trailers.

So then what? Be like sc with no tags or titles?
SC actually does not require them unless the trailer leaves the state. If it does then you are supposed to get it tagged. So technically SC does require them but not all of them.

the way the inspector talked it would have to be titled from a factory or it wouldnt be able to be titled. even if bought out of state if it didnt come with a title it wouldnt be able to get a title. that sounds like crap to me but what i was told

Farm use only, id say rock on. never heard of this exemption before a quick google search today. Anyone with any experience?

Are there any exemptions?

Yes, there are some exemptions in the state of North Carolina. The following are a list of trailers that don’t need to be registered;

  • trailer used by a farmer or his employees to haul livestock, plants or vegetables or equipment
  • small farm trailers used to handle or transport tobacco;
  • trailers used to tow vehicles (tow dollies);
  • trailers pulled by vehicles from another state, like South Carolina where trailer registration and tags aren't required.
Anything else needs a North Carolina license plate. Be aware that not every state titles and registers trailers; however, not titling and registering a trailer in a state that does require it will result in a penalty, which grows more severe the longer the trailer goes untitled.

Wonder if there is any truth to the "trailer used by a farmer or his employees to haul livestock, plants or vegetables or equipment"

I can vouch for that one. Our cattle trailer has never been titled or tagged. We use it pretty regular to haul and have been through license checks with it, no problems. Also, the truck is not a farm tag, just weighted.

Also in NC trailers like cement mixers and bbw smokers do not need plates as long as they are not hauling anything.

quoted for posterity lol. Youre doing what to BBWs?
