Very interesting web article about our local short-line railroad here in Sanford, the Atlantic and Western Railway

One thing stood out: The A&W owns and leases a total of 19 miles of track. They own and lease out 3,000 freight cars. I figure at 55' average length for modern rail cars, that's about 31 miles of rolling stock. Somebody figured out how to make money.

Awesome. I got addicted to Hell on Wheels. Deffinately dramatized for tv but I love everything about that era of western expansion. I absolutely love trains.

Drove a diesel electric almost weekly on 14 little short track in Winston. Came in one day and it had caught fire. They pushed it to the back of a chemical car track and refurbished, cleaned, and rebuilt it on the tracks. The best part is they leased a Northfolk Southern engine. Easily twice in size. Got to engineer on it too!
We ran the smaller one man crew wearing a remote pendant. The loaner was mandatory two man opperation cause you had to have a ground man switcher. The old 68 you did it all hanging off the back platform.

I'd happily work for the rail road.
