Brand new to this world. Grew up driving 4 wheelers. Always loved it. At 41 I couldn't resist the urge and jumped on in by purchasing a 2002 Land Cruiser. Though not an impulse decision, I responded quickly and purchased a overland modified 2002. Unfortunately, on my first trip (only highways sadly) I heard a very unpleasant noise at low speeds. Took it to a local shop in middle of no where New York and they said it was a the transfer case and needed to be rebuilt.

Questions:
1) Where is a good reputable shop near Charlotte (I am not afraid of traveling a bit) that would give me a second opinion and would be able to perform the service. I am assuming a tranmission repair shop would be the place to go. Any place specialize in 4 wheel drives?
2) Rebuild or purchase tranfer case from salvage yard? Not sure what is better or if it matters.

Though a quick learner, I am way over my head. I aspire to be a gear head, yet the words are mostly greek to me. I appreciate your help and look to get out on the trails (next post is to find out best places to play) soon.

x3 for Coreys. I broke the tail housing on my Bronco's transmission last year and needed a replacement quick. Two different transmission shops I stopped by recommended Coreys. I finally went over there and was very impressed. You will be blown away by the amount of inventory he has, and they really know their stuff.
