I have a 727 torq flite in my 81 cj-5. it is behind a 258 6 cyl. It will not shift to second gear. Had it rebuilt the guy said he put a new valve body in it but still no go. Was hoping some one knows what I could try to get this thing to shift. Also is there any other trannie (AUTO) that would bolt up to the 258. BTW running a d-300 trans case.

Take it back to him and remove the body and test it.
yea, thats not going to happen because the last time the guy had it for 3 1/2 weeks and this was his second attempt to get it right. so it will not go back to him. as far as testing it how would you do that?

If you go the other route I have a th400 and quadra-CRAP as rob called it set up....

if it wont shift at all, I have to ask the obvious. Have you checked fluid level?

Yes fluid level is full. it will change to second if it is cold (the first time you crank it up) but after that it just skips second and goes strait to drive once it warms up (above 80 degrees c)
I have got it to go to second but like I said only when it is cooled off.

Is there a vac modulator on that tranny?

I have a rebuilt torque flite 904 and a new reman torque converter that would work as well and it has a 300 adapter on it now. and i have a amc 400 that i got from skyhik5 too.

A lot has to do with gearing. What gear and tire size are you running? I had one once that was so low geared it would do exactly what you say yours is doing. If you manually shift it from drive to 2nd, will it gear down? Do you have your linkage correctly adjust to the carb?
As far as auto's goes, a 727, 999, 904 and 400 will all bolt up, not all will allow the 300 to bolt up.
I am sure there is someone with more AMC experience. AMCJEEPMAN????

Appears to be a problem when the fluid gets warm. That tells me you likely got a pressure problem. Need to have Mr. Rebuildman put a gage on the pump and see if its in specs. At overhaul was the pump replaced? Was the converter replaced? Could be a spool valve sticking in the valve body when it heats up. Was a new vacuum modulator installed at rebuild?

Just some ideas.

No, that was the first thing I thought of too.

If you gear down manually its like it goes all the way back to low when at normal opp. temp. If it is cool it will go to second one or two times. running 456 gears and 39.5 tsl

A lot of good ideas but I was not around to see what went in to the trannie as far as new parts. I do know the converter is new. When the guy had it for 3 1/2 weeks every time I talked to him he would tell me he rebuilt it 4 or 5 times wating on a seal kit and then another 4 or 5 times wating on a new valve body. Sounds like a bunch of :poop: to me. I will have to ck the pressure. THANKS to ALL

Well I finaly got my trannie trouble resolved, and it was nothing more than a broken ring on the sylonoid for second gear. So thanks to all who tried to help me with my problem and all you torq flite guys always remember to CHECK THE SYLONOIDS.
