I am looking to put a mechanical trans temp gauge in my th350, and here's the question, most people put the sender in the pan via bung, I am not using the port where the kickdown cable used to be, so I tapped it and plugged it

Would this be a suitable place to thread in the trans temp sender?

As far as I remember, depending on how much fluid you're running the kickdown hole is barely covered or sometimes not even covered by atf? I personally like to have trans senders in the cooler IN line so as to know the hottest temps the fluid is seeing, but this is different for different transmissions and it's all relative as long as you watch what yours is doing. I'm not convinced it would read anything when on any sort of incline.

I've always used the test port at the rear on the pass side. Would it be more accurate to move to return line?

Put it on the hot (output) line.

Far better to know what the temp is coming out of the tranny than going in.

IMHO.
