i am looking int o buying a '77 cj7 with a 304 v8 engine in plans to build to the jeep i want. the jeep im looking to buy is curretly a automatic. i was wondering if anyone knew if it was hard or not to transfer over to manual, and if anyone has any ideas?

please help

The change over is not that hard. You will need a rear axle because the cj automatic rearend is off-set to the passenger side. The first time I done it I tracked down the parts I needed and it took me forever. The second time I done it I found a straight drive donor and parked it right outside my shop and that went alot better. I'm building one now thats automatic and will be straight drive when done. If you just buy the parts make a list and have someone thats done the swap go over it with you. Good luck

thanks for the tips, how much does it usually run to swap the trani out from automatic to manual, i plan on gettin full width axels anyway so thats not a problem on switching out axels.

It all depends on which tranny you go with. Was you going 3 or 4 speed and which t-case was you wanting the D20 or D300? It works best to think that out before ever starting.

not really sure, wats the difference in the t-case d20 or d300, im pretty new to working on tranys, did alot of other stuff, jut never dealt with tranys. ans was looking at gettin either a 4 speed or a 5 if thats possible.

I don't know everything and there are guys on here that can send you links to all kinds of sites with the info you need. I have a T150(3-speed) for the rig I'm building. In the cj I'm driving I have a T176(4-speed) But it doesn't have a granny(crawl) gear its just a regular 4-speed. What are you going to do with your CJ? Daily driver, trails only. Its good to know that before getting started. And I like the D300 over the D20 but the D20 are laying around everywhere. If your going with full size axles you may want to find a 4-speed with a granny gear(out of a jeep truck or ford truck).

Since you'll need to replace the flex-plate with a flywheel, the door is wide open for whatever manual you want. You'll just have to get the correct bellhousing too. The Jeep CJ 5-speed transmissions aren't that good. AX-15 from later YJ or TJ might be a good candidate, but then you'll likely need an adapter to get a passenger drop t-case behind it.
