Transmission noise?

I have the NV3550 and NP231 in my TJ. Every time I push my clutch in to shift I hear a metal to metal rattle. It does in all gears as soon as press the clutch.

I have checked everything external and it has a new transmission mount. There are no vibrations and it drives and shifts great (other then a shift boot interferance). It is just a very annoying metal to metal clanking sound when I press the clutch. It does it every now and then when I hit a bump also.

release bearing. u can get em at advance or AZ. i can replace em in 2 hours by myself and a jack

I am a little curious as to how the release bearing could make the noise I am hearing. Every time I have had a release bearing go bad it made grinding noise not a rattle. Is sounds almost like the transfer case chain is slapping the inside of the case.

I guess the best way to find it is to pull trans and transfer case and see whats going on.

3550s have a bad oiling problem from what I hear. I've been told from a couple of different people you need to change the oil like every 30,000 miles.

have you checked the bushings for the exhaust... that could cause some annoying rattling noises during shifting, bumps, starting... the release bearing fork which the bearing mounts to could be off its track?? bad lubrication would cause hard shifting and would burn up the synchro's/blocking rings, and the bearings would superheat and basically melt down or theyll lock up(happened to my first tranny half way to the outer banks)

try bleeding the clutch hydraulics from the slave cylinder also. any air would cause the fork to relax a small amount, therefore it woudl rattle and slap around

I believe I've narrowed it to the transfer case. The noise quits when I put it in 4wd, it almost sounds like a chain slap noise. Is it possible for the chain on a NP231 to stretch enough to cause it to slap the casing?

I drained and replaced the fluid about a month ago, the old fluid looked good when I drained and didn;t have any metal shavings.

it is definitely possible for that to happen. its actually quite common. the metal shavings are most likely at the magnet or stuck in the oil pump pick up. the fact that the fluid is clear is a good indication that your bearings are still very good. if you need another chain i have 2 at my disposal that are in awesome condition.

PM me a price for the chain.
