Transmission Problems!! Please help!!

Transmission Problems . . .
Driving down the road shifting to fifth gear and let the clutch out and had nothing. By nothing I mean the stick was in the fifth gear position, the clutch was out and the tach was shooting for the sky. . . The motor and trans both have 150k and some change, the clutch is less then a year old and ive never had any problems out of it before. The jeep got towed home behind the CTD and it had the same response in every gear even reverse, while the jeep was moving or not . . . .
Anyone got any ideas or advice please let me know . . .

If you didn't have any noises to indicate an internal transmission failure....

I'd say something with the clutch.

Did you smell the clutch burning up?
Any oil at the inspection plate?
Improperly installed a year ago?

Can change gears now and feel the shifter going in/out of gear? - if not this could point you to a linkage problem.

there was a slight pop right as i was letting out of the gas before changing gears but nothing that sounded like carnage . . .but no smell of clutch or any oil anywhere, and the clutch feels completely normal as well as the linkage. By the way its a 97 2.5
