I have a 91 XJ, and when i drive the xj on the highways for a long period of time, my gears lock up and i have to jam the stick in to 1st through 4th gears. what could be the cause for this problem.

I'm assuming this a manual trans, and therefore an ax15 since you have a 91 xj,
I've seen on more than one occasion, where the trans becomes difficult to shift, and it's due to one thing, lack of maintenance.
Flush/change the fluid. I've been running mobil1 in my ax15 with good results

My next question is what kind of transmission fluid should i use and what exactly is a GL-1 through 5 and should i flush my transmission or just change the oil. i am kinda leaning towards the flush.

Drain it, refill with good oil

Most auto parts stores have 85w90 or similar. Or something higher like 90w140 or even full synthetic if you feel like spending the money. Any will work just fine. I think the important part is that your changing it and getting it to the correct level. Sounds like your low and its generating some heat...
