So bad news from the transmission shop today. What i thought was an input bearing problem turned out to be the whole cluster from what the shop is saying. Total cost to rebuild, $1700. I just bought this Jeep and already dropped a large amount fixing other problems. I do not want to spend this kind of loot. Anyone have any tips or sites with used trannys? Any input would help. thanks.

Sorry, forgot to add that this is a 2000 TJ 4.0L w/ 3.73 gears. The tranny is either an AX-15 or NV3550. Not sure yet.

thats high for a rebuild, me thinks.

Not unreasonable but you could save some coin.
USED or JY NO unless you want the same poll in 1 month to 5 years, point being you know nothing about it, and sitting for extended periods aint exactly great on an auto.

I would get it rebuilt, no sense spending the extra cash on new. Any quality shop should warranty the rebuild and can make it better than new.

Better than new? You think so? but for that price i could buy new. I mean i dont know much about transmissions but it shouldnt be that difficult installing a new or rebuilt one right? Save at least $500 on labor right?

From your mods area, I'd say look for a NV4500 or other type HD tranny. Look at your wheeling/DD needs and build/replace accordingly. The AX-15/NV3500 IMO wasn't made for big tires, lockers and the abuse that goes along with that. If you had kept your Jeep stock, then keep the same tranny - Upgrade, & enjoy. Later, T.J.

I think for the price an upgrade sounds in order. Sorry, it is a manual. Doesnt the NV4500 require fabrication? How much do they run? i am at work and cant google it. i need a DD cause as much as its costing me to keep it trail ready i need to get to work and back to pay for it all!

if you search around you can find an nv4500 for a decent price.... but they are sought after... I know that Advanced Adapters makes a kit to adapter them to your TJ, but I dunno if id recommend them.... Search on here, JeepinMatt has a buildup thread about putting a nv4500 in his TJ and he might be able to help you with vendors...

Thanks, if you could send him my way that would be great. I called the tranny shop, they had no idea if you could swap a 3500 for a 4500. Looking at Advanced Adapters website their kits for the bellhousing are steep! So in order to swap to this stronger tranny im lookin at alot more money. Im kinda feeling the rebuild now.

Welll did a change on all the fluids in the vehicle today and got an alignment, on the test drive the tranny ceized up. Good news is i think i found one from another TJ. Hopefully i can save some loot!

Take pics if you do the swap yourself! nice find, how much was the one you found?
