I have an 89 cherokee with an automatic transmission that will not go into 2nd or 3rd. It goes into reverse and will engage 1st
but will not shift through the gears. It hesitates a little when put into reverse or drive but then drops into gear and goes. It was shifting fine then this problem happened all of a sudden. I already changed fluid and filter and it acted fine again then after a short period went back to not shifting. I paid 500 for the jeep and it has 202000 miles on it. I need some diretion as to what I can do to fix it myself or do I need to have the trans rebuilt. I have been into an automatic once before but it took forever to get it back right and I don't want to make the same mistake this time.

I'ts about dang time you joined up! These guys can help ya out.

Probably the electric solenoids that orchestrate the valve body shifting. Get an ohm meter and check each of the solenoids for resistance. Search the FSM link and you may find the correct value. They live inside the pan so you will have to pull it and find them. There are usually three. Hopefully you will find one with no resistance and that is the culprit.

My $0.02

I was going to say the solenoids as well. Problem is, once the solenoids go bad, then you can usually bet the trans isn't far behind it (my experiences with replacing solenoids).

I replaced some solenoids and it worked great for about 2 months, then it was just done and needed a whole new trans or rebuild...

IMO, you'd be better off finding a cheap used replacement versus replacing solenoids

Thanks to all

Thanks to all for the help. I have her opened up now looking for the problem. Solinoids check out fine. Looking at some other areas that the manual pointed to thanks for the link. It helps alot.
