Transporting DOM for the Desperate

If delivery was less than $150 then I can justify that. I am 95% confident that there are no reasonable DOM distributors in the Hampton Roads area (Suffolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Newport News) leaving the closest distributor either metal supermarkets or ryerson in Richmond.

That is a very good idea. I will have to see if there is a large aluminum ladder I can use.

I also had the biggest lightbulb today. I completely forgot I have a flying scot sailboat in my driveway and if I were to get the boat off of it on land I would have the best trailer for DOM transportation. I can't believe I forgot about that after people mentioned renting a trailer
Nice Scott. Looks like the same vintage as Dad's He's had his probably 25 years.

If you remove the rigging, the boat is remarkably light. Two people can easily get it on/off the trailer. The mast is the worst part.

I keep thinking about building a long, skinny trailer simply for hauling full sticks behind whatever I'm driving. Anything I own should be able to tug a light trailer with whatever I need for the current project from Dillon to the shop. I've also considered a ladder rack of sorts that slips into front and rear receivers for hauling sticks over the Yukon.

Dillon supply sells tube at reasonable prices. There is one in Franklin, VA. Go there.

Could be mistaken, but I don't believe Dillon does DOM. Just HREW. Depending on how much of a deal they'll work, I've found them to be in line with, if not cheaper than the other locals. Usually my first stop.

My last order of tube was from Dillon Supply and it was DOM. They can get DOM easily and it usually is about 3 day delivery time. It's likely they won't deliver but Dillon Supply is a hell of a lot closer to the OPs area than Richmond. Even if the pricing was a little higher, the fuel and time saved could be worth the possible adds costs.

However, my last tube order through Dillon was within 2% of any of the local steel suppliers so it worked out well.

Isn't some of the heaviest steel consumption in the US occurring at the shipbuilding yards? I would think there would be a ton of suppliers for the miscellaneous crap on a ship like handrails.

Just curious, but why not rent a uhaul truck or trailer. Spending the little bit of cash and doing it right vs. it coming off and causing an accident or something. Just my .02

Yes you are correct about that. I work for Newport News Shipbuilding and can confirm that handrails and stuff like that is going to be tube CRES 304. The navy is cheap and design is simple with angle iron, square tube, and I beam shapes. They are going to use that wherever they can.

All suppliers that I have talked to out here will only supply structural tube. So basically schedule 40. I have searched pirate and even local forums and it still appears buying steel for the average home fab is not easy locally. Why bother selling tiny orders when they can sell hundreds of thousands of dollar to naval shipyards and private shipyards. However I continue to search for the steel shop that has DOM in the area.

I need to call and ask the welding shops in the area and see if they have any good recommendations.
