Alright well I am new to this forum but I am active in alot of other jeep and 4x4 forums. Well the reason I am on this one is because as the title says im trapped in NC haha. I live in GA but my parents live in Rocky Mount, NC and on my way up today around spartanburg, SC well Bump Steer or Death Wobble decided to kick in on I85. Basically ive been to 4 or 5 shops today between SC and here (charlotte). Everytime I get on the highway as soon as I hit any sort of bump the steering goes crazy. Heres whats up...
I have a 98 Grand Cherokee with about 135,000 miles on it. About a month ago I installed Rusty's 3.5 coils, Pro Comp ES9000 shocks, ES2000 Steering Stabilizer, Rusty's Front Adj Track-bar and Bracket, Transfer case drop kit and some other little stuff. I havent up graded the steering or the Control Arms...yet.
Ive had the tires balanced 3 times (To make sure), Aligned, nuts and bolts checked and rechecked. My bushings seem to be in good shape.
SO basically I am down to either getting new adj front lower Control Arms, Drop pitman arm, tie rod ends, and well that is about all I cn guess could be the problem.

MY QUESTION is where are some good shops around this area that may have the parts in stock or what not. I know that 4 wheel parts is about 15 miles down the road and so is Carolina Rock Shop which I guess is right across the street. Its either get it fixed here or tow the piece.

Thanks guys
(Oh and sorry about this being somewhat tech-ish but this is the only place I can Post seeing that I am a new member.)

I got their number and I am going to call them first thing in the morning. I just hope they got the parts in stock. Thanks man

Andy at The Rockshop should be able to fix you up. He's a quality guy.
x2 , you can also try to pm him. sometimes its hard to get him on the phone. his username is zubz

X2 on CRS. Heard nothing but good things about them. Hope you get it fixed!

You guys are awesome, I'll try and PM him

Thats hilarious, I PMed him and now the waiting game

I am going to try and call AAA tomorrow morning and hopefully they will tow me to the shop. It is only 15 miles from where I am at. I appreciate it, do live near by?

I dealt with DW in my ZJ a couple years ago.

Rarely have I seen death wobble be an issue of tire alignment/balance. Its caused by harmonic oscillation of a loose part. Get under the jeep and get someone to turn the steering wheel back and forth all the way. Check for any movement in...

1. Trackbar bolts
2. tie rod ends
3. Draglink
4. Lower control arms

If everything appears to be ok (crank down on it to be sure) then lift the front end off of the ground completely. Wiggle the tire in an up/down motion to check for play in the balljoints. Then wiggle the tire in a in/out motion to check for play in the unit bearings (hubs).

Hope this helps, good luck.

Unevenly worn tires will cause it as well. I have had that happen on two different sets of tires. I agree with Elliots suggestions as well as adding ball joints in there. Any movement that isn't suppose to be there will cause it.

Hey guys,
I talked to Casey this morning and they are figuring out how they want to get the Jeep over to our shop so I can get him taken care of.

Andy

Another night here, replaced the steering box, pump, and tie-rods. Didnt get to finish it today but we will hopefully tomorrow. Andy and everybody down at the rock shop are awesome and I really appreciate all of your help guys. Hopefully we will get it tomorrow.

I chased and chased DW on my ZJ, only to find that it was a combination of a worn out Stablizer and most importantly, a Shot Upper Driver Side Axle end Control Arm bushing. The one that's mounted in the Diff housing and always accumulates the drops of oil that like to eat away at teh rubber bushing.
