According to the Google map / directions, I will take the US-64 exit towards Rocky Mount and stay on 64 all the way to Manteo area. Then will be turning right onto NC12 heading south. (We are staying in Rodanthe, NC)

I wanted to check on here with folks that drive that route / make sure there is not something I am missing / faster? (I see that road to Greenville / just wanted to make sure I would be better off staying on 64...?)

Tips? I will be pulling the camper, would love any tips on good places to pull off and get gas and supplies? I believe there is a Wal-Mart before getting to the OBX, will be pulling camper so wanting places I can fuel up and get in/out of easily.

Other tips? Places to shop, eat, etc? Staying at Camp Hatteras Resort & RV Park in Rodanthe, NC, it is right next door to the KOA.

I have a full sportsman license here in NC, IF I were to try my hand at surf fishing...equipment I would need or other suggestions? (My license will cover it?)

yeah that's about the best way to go. US-64 will take you all the way to Manteo and then over the bridge to Nags Head but you must get gas and anything you need there!! once you head south on hwy 12 you will be driving between sand dunes for about an hour before hitting Rodanthe/Avon/Hatteras. make sure you stay on US-64 and don't jump on 264 around raleigh b/c that will take you to Greenville.

btw, hope you and the mrs. enjoyed breakfast sat. morning :)

you'll love the OBX. i've been 3 times in the past 2 summers. first time we stayed at my buddy's uncles' house in Avon. the second two times we stayed in the northern part of the OBX in Corolla. definitely go see the hatteras and bodie lighthouses while you are down that way. don't know how much longer they'll be there :(

64 all the way. It is mostly 4-lane highway until you get through Columbia. There are plenty of stops for gas/groceries on the way. There is a Food Lion in Avon (25 mins +/- from Rodanthe), you will be about 30-35 mins from Nags Head, depending on where you are in Rodanthe & traffic.
Unless you have a "Unified sportsmans" license, you will have to get a Coastal Recreational Fishing License. They are $15 dollars & you can get them from the WRC building on 64 in Columbia and most tackle shops. Hope this helps, enjoy your first trip out here!

x2 on the cops in that area. That stretch of 4 lane, speed limits will go up and down without much signage and popo is swarming it. Tackle: I always hit the Whale Bone Tackle on the causeway just before you make a right to go south towards Hatteras. He usually has deals on gear and the best advice I ever got on tackle was don't spend a bunch of money for saltwater rod and reel. After you make the right to go south about 12 miles will be the Oregon Inlet fishing Center. Nice tackle shop and lots of shirts and stuff. I'll be going down in July. Every year I go with a bunch of fireman I work with to fish. There is nothing like the outer banks. my 2 cents

Thanks to everyone for the responses and emails!! Keeping printouts of all this and looking forward to it! (Heading out Friday morning.)

Not sure I will end up getting any fishing any mostly because we don't eat much fish (and therefore don't know much about cooking it) Anything I caught I would probably want to eat down there..well I guess I could bring some home on ice.

For a first time surf fisher, any recommendations on what I might catch and how to clean / cook it?

Last summers trip I caught a 23 inch Red Drum under the Oregon Inlet bridge in the surf. It was a great fight. It filleted easily and I blackened it on the grill the next night when I got home. 1 fish that size fed my son, wife and me. I'm not that knowledgeable on surf fishing I just ask lots of questions at the tackle shop and hope for the best. 50$ can get you a rod reel and a little tackle to intertain yourself for a few hours and if you catch something and don't want to mess with it just toss it back.

Still in the middle of the trip!! Sitting in my camper right now, have not had time to try fishing, prob won't now in the next day or so.

Only issues was the wind was really up the first 3 days, has died down to normal now.
