Our neighborhood has been quiet for the past 14 years (notwithstanding one murder -- domestic violence). About 24 houses total, 1200-1500 sq ft...more of a starter neighborhood. They are building new apartments right next to and behind our development. Several apartment buildings are now occupied, and we have seen more walkers and foot traffic on our street.

About a week ago, my wife's car got rummaged through. Nothing missing that we could tell. We had evidently left it unlocked that night. Several cars got hit that night, and I learned today that a couple of cars have been broken into since then.

On top of that, heard tonight that two guys tried to hold someone up the other night. Don't know the whole truth of that, but I started to OC everytime I walk the dog now.

Anyway, I've secured stuff that I used to just leave out around the shop, regularly double-checking the cars are locked, etc. Changed up the alarm so we can leave it set with the dog in the house. Reward the dog when he barks at someone approaching the house. Going to talk to the cops and get them to ride thru more often. And finally, going to put in a camera system like I got for my mom's place a few months ago.

I hate a thief...

...and I am past ready to move. Can't happen soon enough now.

They put apartment buildings in a few parts of our sprawling office park campus, and then cars started getting broken into in front of office buildings within a week of opening the apartments. In broad daylight, during the workday. Now they're building more.

My wife's mom is selling her house in VA for the same reason as you. She's tired of her newer neighbors, and the renters who don't care about anything, and the car break-ins, and the people who toss trash in her yard. There's just something wrong with people now..

Best thing about our neighborhood is that we have a couple of retired folks that are home all the time (and always watching, it seems), several self-employed people like me that come and go all the time, and others that work different shifts that come and go all the time. There are a lot of eyes coming and going at all different and unpredictable) times.

Plus, I walk the dog somewhere around 9-10, and then again before I turn it, usually between 1am and 2:30am or so. The dog is pretty good at alerting if he sees/hears something...and I'll light it up, if I'm not going to shine in somebody's window.

Neighborhood that I grew up in dealt with this right after I went to college. It was a pain in the ass for a while. But, I do believe that everybody got a lot more diligent about locking up stuff and keeping an eye out. I believe they caught them pretty quick.

The problem is that low grade larceny doesn't have much consequence in the court system. Nothing to really deter them from stealing.

This is why if I ever move, I will build a house in the middle of my parents 150 acre track of land. Lots of burial plots for those wanna be thieves

What ever happened w that??

Works great. Just had a couple of instances, but they weren't "real". She got scared and called the cops one time, we got there about the same time. Cops looked at the video with me, said it is one of the better ones they have actually seen in use (Swann). Also made the comment that as often as banks and convenience stores were robbed, they'd have better camera systems -- what is available today -- than systems left over from the 70's and 80's that doesn't have the resolution to identify a face. Everything has been mostly quiet over there.

She swore up and down somebody was on her back patio a few weeks ago, playing a radio at 3am. Didn't tell me about it until the next day. But, it rained during the night, so that is what she was hearing. But you could not convince her otherwise. "but mom, do you *really* think someone would be sitting out there in the rain smoking and listening to the radio?" Stuff in her neighborhood has quieted down, nobody else has had any problems in a while.

That's good everything worked out. We're lucky that we only have one neighbor and even though we share a driveway they pretty much keep to themselves. They were on the verge of losing their house one time and we were willin to help them get caught up just to keep good neighbors.I have a lot that a bad neighbor could bitch about.

heard that there is a string of people going around near where we live, checking to see who left their car doors unlocked...I'm starting to see the beauty of living out of the city limits now...

Guess I'm lucky one of my neighbors is retired Green Beret, other is ex Vietnam Navy Seal. They both are home all the time

All else. Good fences make good neighbors. But they get expensive...
