I don’t feel like many people are buying aftermarket radios like they were 20 yrs ago but who would you be shopping for one with?
I’m looking for a double din with apple car play and a back up camera.
 
Crutchfield and Rockville. Rockville sells pretty awesome packages with amps and speakers if needed. Comes with wiring and what not. I put boom booms and an amp in my pontoon over the summer with one of their packages. No complaints. I have some of their portable Bluetooth speakers, and they work well.
 
Was actually thinking about this the other day. Ive got an alpine unit in my TJ from 2005/2006 that's on its way out. Was browsing options and there are surprisingly some cool ones out there now. I like the floating touch screens that fit in single din slots. May be something similar available for double din slots too. Many now also have back up camera options which would be nice for me since my Jeep has 5 point harnesses.
 
My 98 TJ had a horrible radio in it. Couldn’t hear anything over 35 mph. I took it to Dino A/V in greensboro and he hooked it up. Added double Din with apple car play. Replaced factory speakers and a small amp and sub. I can cruise down highway at 75 topless and doorless and hear great. He also did work on my GMC. I’m not a bass head but quality is fantastic.
 
Just bought a Sony from Crutchfield for $250. Double din, backup, Bluetooth, carplay and android auto. Plays videos if you short the parking brake wire to ground.
 
I did an alpine that does all of the above earlier this year in my 2500. Works great no complaints. Huge improvement over the factory 08 head unit.

Now I just want the hack thing that completely unlocks car play restrictions so I can watch YouTube, while parked of course.

I hate CarPlay since the latest iOS update though. Previously it would work fine without Siri enabled. Now you must have Siri enabled for car play to work at all
 
So I've put it off for years now since my 2012 had the alpine system, backup cam and xm--xm being pretty important to me. Dodge/ram in 2012 did a better job of satellite radio than anyone else including them even now. Anyway with the slide in on the truck it blocks the xm antenna and I'd kind of like Android auto instead of uconnect.
So since you made this thread I spent the entire holiday weekend reading 5000 fuckin idiot reviews of different head units and settled on one like 4 different times. In the end, I think pioneer still wins. Bought a Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX double din, mount kit and iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR + HRN-RR-CH1 that ties it into the factory canbus and steering wheel controls.

Id suggest one of the pioneer dmh nex options.
 
Man I hear ya Brad, but pioneer has never made a unit that was close to intuitive and tactile. That’s my biggest complaint with all aftermarket HU…none have the tactile and ergonomics of the worst factory option

I 100% agree with that Rod, but the newest generation seems to be the most responsive and least china like interface of any of the major players.
The sad thing is you pretty much have no options for a volume knob anymore.

I have a Kenwood double din in my dually that Tonya got from Best Buy a couple of Christmas's ago.I was a teenager when the car audio stuff was hot and it was expensive then,at least for a 17yo working at the chicken place.Its stupid cheap now.Back in the day I would have killed for a 6 disc changer but took a perfectly good factory one out of my truck.Funny how things change.
 
the crappy bluetooth option on my factory unit stopped working, ended up going to crutchfield told them what vehicle i had, ended up getting a Sony XAV-AX4000 (mainly for the wireless android auto/car play features) and opted for the idatalink maestro module (to retain steering wheel controls, backup camera it also connects to the odbii port so i can actually see the TPMS readings on each tire and CEL codes can be read/cleared as well as other options) they provided the mounting kit and the needed wiring harnesses. it was literally plug and play and very simple. looks like a factory install. i don't care to carry a bunch of CD's around anymore , just copy the songs i like to the phone and a backup usb thumb drive and plug it into the radio's usb port.
