Three hundred and four dollars!!!!:kaioken: For 17k lbs weighted tags, to pull a trailer a dozen times a year :shaking:. I almost think I would be better off chancing the overweight ticket. And that's just the tag cost, not including the property tax.

I dropped my weighted tag the minimum, 7 or 8k IIRC. Hopefully that will be enough to keep the DOT police from pulling me the few times I do tow.

Everything went up 30% Jan. 1st

Yeah I saw an article about that and knew this bill was going to be rough. But 300 bucks is ridiculous for the number of times I pull a trailer.

Three trips in a row to the Flats I've had a trooper pull up beside me in my blind spot (between the truck and trailer) and then pace me for a few miles then speed off. Happened just out of Winston Salem on i40 every time. I assume he ran my tags saw the 19k registered amount and decided not to waste his time.

I also had one turn around on 24-27 coming into Carthage on my way home from ure and pull me. After he looked at my registration he said it appeared I had enough tag to cover my rig which is why he had pulled me, so he wasn't gonna bother weighing me and told me to drive safely and have a good day.

I'll just pay the state their extortion money every year since apparently I have a huge trooper target on my back.

Good point. I also had a trooper/DOT pace me on 421 while I was pulling an XJ, just outside of Winston-Salem around 2010. I assume he was running my tag, found I was at tagged for 13-14k, and it was probably good for my load. He didn't bother pulling me and accelerated past.
I rarely tow anything now, mostly local, so I'll take the risk. If I plan to tow a heavier load on the highway (especially westbound where checks seem more prevalent), all I have to do is bring my checkbook to the DMV office and bump my weight rating. It should be effective immediately.

Same thing here. Had a Trooper pace me on 40 or 421 west of winston salem several years ago.

Side question, a cargo van/ work van needs weighted tags correct? But not a passenger van correct?

My understanding is, years ago only DMV cars/officers pulled commercial vehicles and got out the scales etc for random roadside inspections. But, they merged the departments into one, and ALL SHP officers are also DMV enforcement. I remember in the 90's seeing different DMV marked patrol cars. Those are long gone.

However, the chances a local cop or police officer is ever gonna pull you for a tag weight issue is gotta be single digits.

Also, for all those guys pulling 10 ton goose necks etc, be very careful pulling with your 1 ton truck, many have GVWR over 10k lbs, and its very easy to have a CGVWR over 26k, regardless of actual total roadside weight a class A is needed!

Yea they merged the departments back in the 90s. I've noticed its usually the troopers with Tahoe's that have the portable scales.

I'm not sure about the cargo vs passenger van tag thing.

My f250 has a 10k gvwr my trailer is 14k so my cgvwr is 24k. Loaded down for a weekend trip to Harlan my whole rig is 18.5k, I'd run a van but I like having the 4wd on the tow rig its saved me several times, and I use the truck bed often enough.

Mine was right at $350 this year. And yet we still can't afford to widen I-77, so we will have some Spanish outfit build it and toll the users. Ridiculous.

Dude. NC is .... what? The 42nd richest state? We're down at the bottom of the list with Alabama, South Carolina, and West Virginia.

Find me a van that'll tow a 18k gooseneck. :flipoff2:

I wonder if this would still work, since it's originally titled as a van.....
