OK here's the deal. I have raced MX and ridden the woods on motocross bikes for 20+ years. Due to my consistently growing injury report I am getting off 2 wheels and getting into something with a cage.
I have been to URE a few times in my stock Cherokee but didnt do anything other than the greens. (It's my wifes DD and bringing it home with broken parts would not be conducive to a happy household.) I will be buying a trail rig/crawler in a few months. My question is does anyone do crawling clinics? I would like input from experienced drivers so I could learn from them rather than learning by breaking parts. I know I will be breaking stuff, but I want it to be from pushing my limits rather than doing stupid crap.

Just keep an eye on the upcoming events section. Try to attend a few of those. Make friends, your gonna need em in this hobby.

The best way to learn is to make mistakes. Once you get a crawler, get it in the dirt and keep doing harder stuff til ya get stuck.

Never go alone. Stay on the trails. DO NOT trespass. carry a spare tire. Dont leave trash on the trails.

Look for the DPG events. try to make it to one of those when they have an open invite. Thats a cool place to watch and learn.

Keep an eye out in the Up Coming Events post. Best thing to do is find people with similar type rigs and do a few trail rides.

Hell next time I am in URE I will give you a shout and your more than welcome to tag along.

You said you ride motorcycles if you still have one, Ride it up to Rockey Mount, Park and watch on a busy day. You will pick it up pretty quick.

Preaching to the choir there. Well maybe not the spare comment but I have been saying that to motorcycle riders and mountain bikers forever. Nothing pisses me off faster then to see trash left on a trail I KNOW only mountain bikers use. We have lost so many places to ride due to idiots acting like idiots.
Thanks for the heads up guys.

burrellsjeep...you get in touch and I'll be there. My learning curve is 90 degrees at this point and hitting the trail with experienced drivers is the best way for me to learn.

I have an annual guys camping / wheeling trip the first weekend in Oct in URE.

I am pretty sure were headed down this year also.

I head in on Friday and Head out on Sunday Morning. We wheel the whole time.

amount of money needed or spent is usually connected to the right foot. that has always been my expierence at least. this will help you out the most when breaking parts

Steve,
Welcome to NC4X4!

Learning this is just like learning anything else, you can read all you want, but to really learn, you have to do it. Good mentors will help out a bunch. I will extend an invitation to come take a look at the Carolina Trailblazers. Good group of guys and gals and we wheel every month, sometimes more often. We would love to have you join, and always willing to give you advice when you want it.

Our Clinic happens the second weekend of about every month;)
