"trueing" tires

The only thing I can think of is what Hunter calls OEM matching. Tires and wheels aren't exactly round so you match the high spot on the tire with the low spot on the rim to make the whole assembly more round. We've got a tire balancer that you can measure the roundness of the tire and wheel separately. You mark the wheel and the tire where it tells you and then break the beads on the tire and spin the tire on the wheel till the marks match up. It finds bent wheels pretty well too. You'd be amazed how many BMW owners bend wheels!

"Truing" actually removes material (rubber) from a tire in an attempt to make them round

not a practice that is used as much anymore with the new balancing machines that are able to do as Pete ( Rattlecan) described.

And yes Pete, I wouldn't expect anything different than BMW owners trashing the wheels. Most of them are unconsious boobs aiming down the road while yapping on the cell phone.

For the most part, you don't need to true street vehicle tires.
If there is something going on that makes a tire that out of round, then there is a problem like a broken belt or such.

It's done more for performance, smoothness of ride and getting all available traction out of a given tire.

its actually very popular in the street crowd that run MT;s. It balances the wheel/tire on the vehicle. It does remove material from the tire to true its rotation in relation to the wheel/rotor/unit bearing/hub, etc. A few customers have had it done, and their 35" TJ rode like they hade 235 all terrains on it. Pretty pointless if you offroad it, but ive seen it first hand and it does work.

HIJACK!!

I need that OEM matching.. The tires on my D/D (275/40-17) have an annoying out-of-balance condition, and the people at discount balanced them twice, but it still vibes. I've been trying to true them with burnouts, but to no avail.. :D

Who does this kind of work? I need new tires soon, and may just want to buy them from someone who can balance them correctly, and won't want to try and charge $35 a tire for road force balancing..

Hall Tire in Greensboro does it....we have them done there all the time. The front struts on BMW and Mercedes will get weak causing the tires to feather and get wavey. It works.

I bought a used set of 31 inch Swampers for my Zuk from an NC4x4 member, only to find that the one with the most tread was maybe 11 ounces out when I went to have them mounted and balanced. That was the first one they tried to mount & balance. It was useless to pursue it any further at the moment, so I have no idea whether the other three have the same problem...I was either going to have to have them "trued" or have a set of Swampers for trail use only...which would suck, since I drive the 1 hr 15 min trip to Uwharrie when I go trail riding.

Holy crap! $35 a tire for roadforce? It literally takes an extra 30 seconds per tire! I roadforce every tire I balance. Helps sell those $3-500 wheels!

I'm guessing you work at the BMW dealer, making it impractical to try and get you to balance these.. :p
