Trying to diagnose transmission issue.(91 MJ)

Ok I think the torque converter in my mj is going out. at 45+ when going up a hill it feels like driving on a rumble strip until you let off the gas or force it to down shift. I can get it to do it at as slow as 35 on occasion but it is almost always at 45+.


It is a jeep aw4 transmission.
91 mj 4.0HO aw4 np231
Thoughts?

go and get a product called "dr. tranny shudder fix", i know carquest is the only one in raleigh that keeps it in stock but other auto parts stores can get it. add the tube of liquid to your trans and within 100 miles the shudder should be gone.

The fluid in the tranny is dark brown and slighly burnt smelling so should I change the fluid and then add the shudder fix stuff?

i would add the shudder fix before you service it. drive it a few hundred miles to make sure the shudder goes away, then service it.
