trying to find out

i just bought a 1980j10 and the guy said it had a locker in the front. is there any way to know for shure if there is or not with out taking it out.

You can pull the diff cover off and give it a looksee. Wouldn't be a bad idea to do that anyway to change the fluid in there.

lock the hubs, tcase in neutral jack up on tire and try to turn?
