Why are tube fenders so expensive? is there something really special about them that i'm missing or is it a supply/demand/steel price issue??? Those that have the tube fenders on your YJs what are you paying for a set???

Also if any of our web fabbers out there makes these what would a set run??? :driver:

Relatively easy to make some. I've had 2 different sets on my rig over the years. First set was really simple and utilized the stock fender. The second set are what I'm running now, made out of tube. Maybe pick a set you like and try to copy them. If in the end if you aren't satisfied you can always buy a set.
1st set

2nd set

Think about the development cost. (not terrible for something like a fender, but the the time/material involved in producing an acceptable product does cost)
Think about the raw material cost. (metal prices are up)
Think about the tooling cost to produce it. (I'm not sure how they make them but... if fabricated by hand it takes time.. Welders/wire/benders,grinders, etc aren't cheap. Automated welders/Fabrication machining are really expensive...)
Think about employee cost.
Think about any overhead cost (utilities, maintenance, insurance).
Think about fuel prices/shipping cost.

All this stuff adds up.

Think about the fact that they have to make a dollar too (Even though I imagine they have a good markup). The $500 ish Poison Spyder fenders aren't cheap, but they pretty much bolt on and are 3/16" thick.

Did some trading with Zubz when he had the rock shop open. HE bent up my tube and give me enough straight to make the rest. I had the sheet steel so, it was a matter of cutting, notching, grinding and welding. Braxton came up and helped me out some and about two evenings and mine were done. Not perfect, but I like em.

Nice setup on the home made ones... I guess a person with Zero fab skills will just have to suck it up and spend the dough.. blah!

Indy Will and I bent these up one weekend...

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics. They aren't done, still need some plate but you get the idea...

I BOUGHT A SET OFF EBAY FOR 200 BUCKS. THEY WERE MADE BY STUDENTS AND IT SHOWED. THE WERE UNFINISHED. IT TOOK SOME EXTRA METAL AND BONDO BUT AFTER A LONG...LONG...LONG SATURDAY THEY TURNED OUT GOOD. EXCEPT THEY DONT HAVE QUITE ENOUGH ROOM FOR 37'S WHEN FLEXED OUT AND TURNED TO A LOCK. BUT IF YOU PRICE 20' OF 1.5" DOM TUBING AND ABOUT 8 SQ FT OF SHEET METAL YOULL HAVE ALMOST $150 IN MATERIAL ALONE IF YOU BUILD THEM TO POISON SPYDER SPEC. I STILL THINK I GOT A GOOD DEAL BUT IT TOOK ALOT OF WORK.

I love that, I always think "WHY ARE YOU YELLING???"

Nyway, use the pipe from lowes its 17bucks for 10 ft of 1 1/4 sch 40 fits in a 1 3/4 die make one or two bends zap em on and your done, just trim the stock fender into a flat piece b4 hand to go around with the pipe . . . I'm sorry but if you use bondo on a tube fender you are seriously defeating the purpose of having it in the first place :shaking:

WELL LIKE I SAID THEY WERE MADE BY STUDENTS AND IM A LITTLE TOO EGOTISTICAL TO GO OUT IN PUBLIC WITH SOME FENDERS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY WERE MADE BY SOMEONE THAT HAS NEVER WELDED BEFORE SO I USED METAL GLAZE TO ROLL THE BENDS SMOOTHLY. IF THATS NOT HARDCORE OFFROAD ENOUGH FOR YOU THEN GO F YOURSELF. THEYVE BEEN SLAMMED INTO TREES ROCKS AND ONE OTHER VEHICLE AND THE GLAZE LOOKS BRAND NEW WHERE THE FLARE ROLLS DOWN.

Dude I was just messin with ya, pretend every post I type I'm sitting there laughing n joking, like I said above, almost every other mod I do to my Rigs gets called out for being dumb by others :shaking:

The button below the "tab" key and above the "shift" key is the "caps lock" key. Sometimes it can be inadvertently turned on. That is all I have to add to this thread.

I've been thinking about the tube fenders b/c

1. i think they look snazzy
2. the guy before me put these big fenders on
3. well i had a 3 but don't remember it right now

but on the down side, i guess they wouldn't block water/dirt/mud from splashing up into the cabin.

IM JUST KIDDIN BUT I GET YELLED AT BY MY BOSS IF I TURN CAPS OFF AND FORGET SO JUST TURN THE VOLUME DOWN ON YOUR PC. MY FENDERS DO A GOOD JOB BLOCKING MUD AND WATER BUT THEY HAVE 4" FLARES. UNLESS YOUR TALKING ABOUT GETTING SOME WITH NO FLARE OR YOU HACK THE WHOLE INNER FENDER I DONT KNOW WHY THEY WOULDNT BLOCK WATER

DONT FORGET IF YOU TIE THEM TOGETHER IT WILL KEEP YOU FROM CRUSHING YOUR GRILL/RADIATOR/HOOD WHEN YOU PUT IT ON ITS SIDE
