Turn in your man card....

Hell I say put a key fob on it and just pull up to the dock push the button ole ferd comes backing down the ramp drive boat on hit the button and it pulls you back into a parking spot or if I'm really shitfaced i just sit in the boat and it takes me home!!

I'm not against backup camera either. My new truck has one, and like @Ron said it has its uses. But I also use my mirrors and look around. I do not use it when I'm backing my trailer though. I'll be honest I tried it. It screws me up, been doing it too long with just my mirrors.

I'm all for technological advancements, but this one is lost on me. It doesn't seem to have any intelligent controls. Rather than turn a big knob, you turn a smaller knob.

I could be wrong - but I think that b/c of the reverse view of the camera, they have done thsi so the small knob turns the opposite direction the wheel would. E.g. it's more like you're steering what you see through the camera.

Yeah - neat feature to make it easier to back up. But what happens in 10 years when nobody knows how to back up w/o using this anymore, and a system breaks?
It;s like in-car and in-phone GPSs. Nobody knows have to use a fucking map anymore. Then when their phone dies, or loses a signal, they flip out.

Back up cameras are nice, especially when backing a truck into a tight parking deck and making sure I dont ram the structure with the hitch. It literally allows you to get cm close. Plus back up cameras can save the life of children who run behind cars. I fully support those. *(BTW the greatest feature of a back up camera is the ability to 1 shot a trailer hook up every single time, solo)

Love the back up camera on my fire truck. But some features are just gimmicks. The blind spot cameras on the fire truck are useless. The last thing I want to do is take my attention off the road and check the small screen. May be helpful to the captain because he has the same view on his screen but that is the only advantage I can see.

Remember when Chevy had their 4 when steer trucks that were going to revolutionize backing trailers?

i thought drive by wire was illegal?

I don't think this technically qualifies as "drive by wire"... drive by wire means there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front tires, so if electrical power fails, no steering...

Correct. If the EPS fails, you still have a link to the steering box, it will just be unassisted, just like a hydraulic assist system.

Anyone see the powerblock build where they're using the electric assist column? Think it is the ecoboost f100.

Yeah..... That was in production for what..... A year lol

The problem was the lawsuits.
GM sued an electric actuator to lock the rear straight and apparently a few of them failed at highway speeds.
Lawsuits ensued and as a matter of settlement the feature was discontinued. At least that is how I remember it...

The problem with those 4-wheel steer Chevys wasn't the system, it was that it added $4k to an already expensive truck. People at the time didn't buy it.

If you put that into a truck today and said it would help them park their truck they would sell like mad because people are pussies.

EDIT: Just saw Ron's post. I might be wrong, but I thought my reason was the correct reason. He might be right too, but just for sake of argument......I'm right.

I've got an 8ft wide bucket truck with a 6ft wide chipper behind it and busted mirrors. I guess I'm a pussy because I'm gonna put a backup camera on it. Oh yeah, and it's a short wheelbase trailer with a homemade pintle hitch that has about a 3" diameter hole.

best typo ever! hahaha

I used to drive a twin steer concrete mixer, always wished they would put one on it. Sucked balls backing up to a pump at night with a light plant staring straight back at ya.... Sometimes you just had to bump the pump to know you were back far enough lol

I'd like to see someone use this backup feature while backing 2 trailers full of tobacco. Bet it won't work and will be for some great laughs lol

Fords lane departure assist has been around for a few years. It can track the lines and make minor steering corrections to keep you in the lane.

If the lane markings are clear enough, it will pretty much drive itself.

It bitches at you to put your hands on the wheel, but it does just fine on its own.

Yep, friend of mine has a 2013 fusion ecoboost titanium. Pretty cool system.

Yup. 12 years ago an extra $4k was something people actually thought about. Nowadays truck prices are even more ridiculous than ever so hell what's another $4k!
