So this is a jump off the other thread, I did a tire swap on the xj today to make it a little more road friendly. I have done the following and would like to stay in the mountain area of NC. If you have a sopt or road you don't want to share to all PM me

Hurricane Creek
cataloochee
free sites off 181 near mortimer and wilsons creek
GSMNP

I am looking for a forest service rd loop or something close what do you have?

Brown mtn ohv. Only the main trail is usable for trucks, but it's a little more of a slight challenge than it use to be.

Also if you have a map of the Wilson creek area, old house gap is a dirt road off of roseboro rd.
A few decent places to camp near the trail.

Do you guys get to stretch out in an XJ with the seat down or are you cool with having to curl up? I used to sleep in my XJ a lot in college but it was never a first choice.

5'7 I inflate an air mattress with the hatch closed works well

Waterville exit you can take a gravel road all the way into catalochee valley. It takes a couple hours

You can also go to Harmon’s den area and take the road that leaves out of the back of the parking lot at the fields and go into Tennessee.

I have no clue how far they go into Tennessee but I drove for about 3 hours before I turned around.

Day1.5 yesterday I hit old house gap and then returned home. I picked up the trash I saw and cleared a fallen tree from the trail

What did you think of old house gap?
I have been camping in that area for over 20 years...

Oh, and if you are still looking for places to explore in this area, maybe try the dust bowl.
It was a failed golf course project in the late 70s, which when I was younger was a massive undeveloped chunk of land.
Now days its 80% developed, but still some nice camping spots.
Just follow beech mountain parkway until it turns to dirt.....

Well I would like to.post an epic campsite tonight but this happened. If can't control your dog please leave it at home. I did run a gameland road on the way home and ended up in a odd place by then the bite wound has mad a mess in Jeep and on me . So sitting on the couch waiting to go see the doctor to see if he can stich it up in the am.

owner had it on a leash coward ass bit me after I passed him. The owner told me to go by after talking with them about the trail.

I would have beat the owners ass for not keeping control of their dog.

this.

Then take the dog into custody for 10 days of quarantine to be sure there are no Rabies.

Well there is that whole thing about not hitting women and shooting the dog right there would of caused a lot of drama.
The lady and her kids where here form florida with their aunt. They did not understand the Smokies are a temperate rain forest and tree roots on hiking trails get slick and there are elevation gains and loses on trails. They where nervous because I think one of them had fallen ,the dog was picking up on that and reacted on me. No harm no foul I have their info in case of issues.
