When the u-joint and shaft ears let go it broke the top ball joint and the bottom joint slipped out. The steering link was the only thing holding the wheel assembly on. We got it patched back together in about an hour and limped back to the trailer in two lo. Got new Yukon shafts and super joints on the way.

That sucks! Looks like it did a bit of fender damage too. Time for flat fenders!

This is a great way to put it. Sucks that you had to limp it out, but to be able to limp out to a trailer and order the upgrades is the correct way to do it. I know a couple that would have tried to limp it home and then just patched it back together.

Most people dont have the funds to drop 600.00 on alloy shafts and super joints... especially when 297x/760x shafts generally go for 100-150.00 for 2 whole assemblies...

Also Foreman,
Just curious but did you try to move the jeep after the u-joint broke? Also were your caps welded on? I dont know if this was your case but typically if you bust a joint and stop instantly the ball joints usually dont go...

Finally are those 35" MTZs?

Actually it was on a nasty part of Daniel towards the top so I was on it pretty hard but I let off as soon as I heard the dreaded u-joint noise but it was too late. It happened really fast. I've broken u-joints before but nothing like this. The caps were tack welded on but maybe not enough. And finally the tires are 35" MTZ's.

We are talking about Uwharrie arent we? I've not seen a nasty part on Daniel yet....

Well he made it a nasty part thats for sure....

I figured we'd still be up there getting him off the trail...

Although it was good to see the faces of the people that didn't think we could get it it to move, and then drive by them an hour later......!

And congrats on getting those alloys..................... We are excited for ya..... ha

my thoughts exactly!!

good to see youre going for axle upgrades, and not just a quick fix!!

I know Daniel one of the harder trails up there but how in the world did you that. I ahve been up Daniel lots of times in stock form, on 31" tires and now on 33" tires and never had that sort of trouble. Maybe I just take the easy way:beer:

yeah daniel seems a lot easier now then it has in the past. dang dana 30's

why does that pic look like it has been photoshopped?

oh maybe it is because the tire moved forward. idk just looks weird to me how the tire meets the fender and the lighting, but i know its real.

I have also been up numerous times stock, on 33's and 35's without any problems. I've also been up and broke a u-joint. This particular time I chose a pretty challenging ledge and was a little over zealous. I knew I should back off but I was having too much fun.

I was thinking the same thing about photoshop, but then looking at the fender I realized the tire was up into it.

I thought kodiak was tougher than daniel but we were in a xj locked in the rear only no front drive shaft. 32s 5 inch lift..full throttle assault and some broken windows

Kodak was tougher. Overall Daniel was nothing really, but there was a bank of large jagged rocks on the right hand side 3/4 of the way up that has gotten pretty nasty (most people avoid it). After he hopped up onto it there was nowhere to go but the bank to the right, and he was already in the holes dug by the Toyota. He had to give it quite a bit of throttle, and it kind of jumped the bank and landed hard with the wheels spinning, which is what caused the breakage.
