upgrade relay rod?

Does anybody make an upgraded relay rod for 86-95 Toy trucks?
i've bent another one :lol: (and don't qualify fir the recall, it's an 88).
 
Well, I have an old one from another truck. I'm thinking of strengthening it by sleeving it w/ a piece of DOM w/ ID that exactly matches the OD of the main shaft.
Thoughts?
Unfortunately I'll have to cut it in the middle.... then slip the two halves into the outer sleeve, then weld the ends. Might drill a few holes in the sleeve first to use for plug welds.
