URE Jeep Stuck, Rescue needed

Hey all, a friend of mine was out at URE this weekend and was coming down Daniel in his cherokee (after breaking rear a yoke on the 3rd ledge) at the hairpin turn just after the second ledge when his brakes went out. His jeep went off the trail and down the cliff there. He sustained a bad cut to his leg and had to go to the ER today in Troy. His jeep is still down about 25-30 feet off the trail on Daniel. He is unable to walk for at least a week. I looked at the situation and it seems that 2 winches are necessary to pull him up and out of there onto the flat ground, then some brake work (think it has air in lines and sucked air from MC reservoir, pedal went soft).
Anyone local to the area or have a day off this week and want to practice a tough recovery? I know its the Jamboree this weekend, but I am leaving out of the country this Saturday AM. He is pretty beat up and bummed about the whole situation, and I know getting his jeep home safe would really lift his spirits.

Thanks ,
Sam

What day are you thinking about going this week? I might be able to help.

I can help just let me know...couldn't be there until 6ish tonight. It sounds like you may need 3 or so winches if it will only pull the front end. If we get it up on the trail can it be driven? I know the brakes are gone but we could leave a cable on the back of it, the trail isn't too difficult from that spot to the parking lot.
I'd get it out soon...that Explorer that got left at the bottom of dutch John for a month got vandalized pretty badly (like not worth getting out now).
I also noticed a montero that couldn't make the left hand turn after just after the hill climb on Dutch John and was a 100yds or so down in the woods and abandon, hope they get it out.

Maybe Scott fields and Mike Morrison could help and use this as a recovery training.

Well.... fawk. I'm trying to think of where it would be after the hill climb. Once you get to the top of the hill there, it's easy back to Slab Pile, right?

@snappy @krzyabncanuck I'd be up for a work day recovery session.

Can the Explorer be made into a roller? It was complete (and looked to not have been there long) when I saw it last, but that was a month ago.

Once you make it to the top of dutch john and start back down a small hill with a sharp left hand turn at the bottom...it's been so muddy the past couple of weeks that the turn is hard to make. I spent 20 minutes there in a locked YJ on tons and 37's trying to make the turn safety until I told my wife and kids to get out, because my lazy ass didn't put the winch on that trip. I got around it finally in 3rd. I'm sure the Montero couldn't make the turn and tried to go straight out through the woods and that didn't work out. The Explorer looks like someone played monster jam on it and it's all to pieces now.Maybe a good 8.8 but that's probably it.

We are looking at tomorrow before I can go and have 2 rigs lined up and a 3rd possibly. Greg I will call you in the morning.....

@BIGWOODY I wont be able to leave Kernseville till 4pm or so. I think waiting the extra day for things to dry out will make efforts a little easier. I also need to OP to contact me so I can get as much detail as possible. If it is where I think we may have an alt way of recovery jut need to get as much detail as possible. I would like to talk to someone that has eyes on this......

Hey guys. I'm the one with the jeep stuck. I can get someone to come down when you guys want to go and try the rescue. This jeep is my baby and wouldn't know what to do if I couldn't get it out. I will be appreciated if anyone can help me out.

The Explorer is somewhat a roller now, the drivers side tires are de-beaded and the others could prob use some air. We had planned to recover it this weekend but with the rain it was not going to be likely we could get it out.

Ranger Walker would like to have the Explorer removed from Dutch John hill climb also. In ANY condition as it is now scrap. Preferably before this weekend's Uwharrie Jamboree. If anyone could make that happen it would be appreciated. Just get it to any parking lot and the FS will remove it.

I walked up there with @samsterman99 Sunday evening and was able to get a pic before my phone died. the jeep is in a difficult spot but should still be recoverable with a couple winches and skilled operators.
Slowly letting it down the ravine looked like a last resort option as well but that would probably be more difficult than pulling it up 20 or 30 ft

I know the explorer doesn't have keys. You might have to get creative in finding a way to make it steer, as it is a ride out from where it sits. I won't be able to make it out. We can work on extracting it if it is there Nov 5-7.

I'm sure it's gone by now, but I left a large crow bar in that area when we fixed the split rail in Sept. If anyone has found it, please PM me. Thx

Is 5 pm tomorrow a for sure thing ? If so I need to know. Really late for that recovery though. Need it to really be around 3 pm to be safer .

Yes thats the earliest I can make it. Greg is coming and 2 other rigs. Thats 4 rigs plus one of the guys buddy.

So If I bring a cordless sawzall and cut the steering lock out of the explorer....I doubt anyone is going to care after it looks like someone drove over the roof of it anyway? I'm not getting into recovering that thing tomorrow, anyone know who owns it?

No clue on the owner because the plate did not match but Ranger Walker would like the vin to run and see.

They do not really care how or what comes out with the Explorer. As long as we do not destroy the trails and it gets dropped off at the double parking lot for a wrecker to pick up. They would just like it out before the weekend.

Man... if only we knew someone short enough to fit in there and work the steering while it gets dragged out....
