URE Meeting place?

Thanks for the honest answer. If you dress like that down in Montgomery county, I'm pretty sure anyone that was born/raised there would look at you funny. They are so back-asswards it's ridiculous. The people who owned the store before us basically ran it into the ground. We took over April 1, 2007 and had hardly any business. Not even local people would come in. We've now gained alot of the local business, and try to be as friendly as possible to everyone that comes in. Next time you are down that way, stop on in and see what we've done with the place. We've got T-shirts, Hunt/Fishing gear, camping supplies, hardware, food, drinks, coolers, etc. Basically all the same stuff as the Outpost, just in an older location. I think that building was originally built in the 60s!

I'll swing by there the next time I'm down. I'm a littless go to hell now-a-days... lol(to some people)

Clean bathrooms (especially with baby changing stuff) goes a long way with the family travellers.

What would have helped us on many occasions would have been a water hose! Yesterday a buddy's fan kept cutting off b/c of the mud caked around it, and no way of rinsing it off.

Air compressors that work, decent grill food, any one of those would sway us to drive an extra mile or two. We come in from Salisbury so the Outpost is the first store we get to, but my dad and I used to stop at Mullinix when I was a kid travelling through to his family's place down in Richmond Co.

When I started reading your thread, my absolute first thought was, "Where is this place?" Then once I realized, it made sense. Like stated - I'd bet 90% of the URE traffic is coming from the north, so they hit the Outpost first, then URE. I know it's stupid, but these days people are very sensitive about driving "out of the way" b/c of high gas prices. Now, the difference here is negligible, but that general mindset is still there and you have to overcome it.
If yo ureally want to increase your traffic, try and think of what makes you DIFFERENT from the outpost - what can you offer that they cannot, that will make it for folks to drive the 3 extra miles. Then, fork out the $$ for a nice big sign on 109 heading South, just BEFORE the outpost, emphasizing this feature and "only 2 mi on Right" or whatever.

we got WiFi, does that count?

We used to stop by the mullinex in the late 90's when we drove our rigs to uwharrie. We would stop for gas, snacks and air up before heading home. Then the old air compressor on the side of the store quit working and the store owner never fixed it so we stopped going there since we couldnt air up. Now we pull our rigs on a 34ft trailer so there is no room at the mullinex for a dually truck and long trailer so we patronize the outpost.

Well there is a new air pump now on the side of the parking lot. We are also working on extending the parking lot. This should be in the works shortly.

Point well taken - I understand completely why storeowners wouldnt want to have water hoses available - sure would have made life easier tho - and no we don't go leave blobs of mud at the local spray wash

Maybe fill propane tanks too...
Do you offer Ice for coolers?? Maybe help sponsor an upcoming event, that would open some eyes up for sure!!
Or cheap hot dog prices for us cheap asses on here

We now have a RapidXchange propane thingy out front so you guys can come and buy/exchange empty tanks for full ones. I'll have to check about the prices though, I can't remember off hand.

We do have hotdogs and i believe they are 2/$1.99. The grill has definitely been updated from when it was Mullinix's. We have some really good popcorn chicken and chicken fingers. Fries, deli sandwiches, etc.

We have ice out front in 10 or 16lb bags. I know we've sponsored some fishing tournaments, but nothing 4wd related as far as i know.

Plus, just for the record, the Mtn Mkt is open 6am-9pm everyday. We have a hardware section, and a few tools. I'll talk to him about getting more tools (i.e.-wrenches, hammers, etc.) I know right now we have nails, bolts, screws, that sort of thing.
We've also got ice cream (hand dipped, soft serve, and pints/sandwiches).
We do have a bathroom that stays relatively clean. It usually has some clorox wipes in it if you think that it's not sanitary enough. We also have T-Shirts for those of you who get really messy. Camping gear. Propane torches. Bug spray. Coolers. Firewood. All sorts of fishing supplies, rods/reels. A pretty nice selection of knives.
We sell the 4wd daily/season passes. Shooting range passes. Hunting/Fishing licenses. We also have the NC Education Lottery for those of you who need a gambling fix ;). There is a vote on Beer coming up in a few weeks and if we can get that to pass, we will be able to sell it within a month or so after.

it's funny that you should bring this up, because when we went down for the 4th and 5th, I stopped in at that place and asked for directions to the Outpost (I knew it was in that area somewhere, I just couldn't remember exactly how far down it was) since I was coming from the opposite direction Tony was coming from. there were 2 younger girls (obviously of age, but not your typical convenience store worker age) and they were quick to help me out but made sure to tell me to start meeting up with my buddies there instead of the outpost...after giving it some thought, I decided I just may start going there..mainly just to mix things up a bit. :p

and besides, they WERE quite friendly. they picked on me a bit for stopping there to ask for help, but I certainly didn't mind.

 that was most likely my wife and her cousin. they are both in their 20s. it's a family owned business so almost everyone that works there is related somehow. like i've said before, we'll try and be as helpful as possible...even if it's directions to the Outpost! :shaking::lol:

wow, he was flirting with your wife.. or was that the other way around.... HEY! what kind offerings do you guys have there???!!!!

j/k

I thought I'd update you guys about what's been going on at the Mountain Market. We are currently in the works for remodeling and adding a full sit down restaurant! They have completed the septic system and are working on the electrical lines. Once that is completed and the weather clears, they should start on the construction. It's gonna be great!! :)

Corey, what the status on parking? When we were there last summer, your dad mentioned there was a plan to make more space around back?
I think that is one of the bigger concerns, esp w/ guys using tow rigs etc.

I think you can tell them your presence here has helped quite a bit, tis one of the reasons I got my pass from you guys AND my wife and I made a point to hit the store during the race last year. (Obviously we hit your booth too, heh)

Smoke? Trying to remember for sure, but I think I remember walking in and a bunch of cigerette smoke, maybe not / or could have had to walk thru a cloud to get in the front door?

Parking continues to be an issue (this year I am back to tow rig/trailer...)

Just a suggestion / and I am really surprised Eldorado Stables has not jumped on this...is a "RV" friendly campground. Not sure how much space you guys have right around you or could buy... but even a 10 space rv campground with FULL hookups would get my biz. (I do want a nice shower house too)

I am coming to the race in May, hauling my 28' camper, staying in Arrowhead. But no water, cable, wifi, and sewer is a bit of a bummer. Wife MIGHT actually come if I had those...

I realize that is a tall order and have not looked at your land, but I would say if you had some RV spots, it would be natural to stay there / eat at your store / etc!?

If there was land close by / that you could buy and convert / and have a smaller store/office (supplied by the MMkt inventory) that might work, but all in 1 spot would be nice.

I will see you in May if not before!

Corey, thanks for the pass, that was so convinient! I will definately stop by when I head to URE this year!

Once the construction on the addition is built, there will be parking all the way around the building. I'll keep you guys updated on the status of this as well.

well, we just aquired another acre to run the septic on so we'd have enough to support a restaurant. i'm not sure if he's thought about RV stuff. Good questions.
