Brother-in-law getting out of high school & he's looking for an auto tech program and is considering UTI in Mooresville. I'm trying to help him out as much as I can, was wondering if anyone out there has been through the auto tech program or has experience with UTI...

Not a bad beginners program if you have the will to be at the top of the class you may get accepted into a dealer specific program after you complete the uti training. You have to learn there way and forget the way you have done it in the past. My brother-in-law graduated from there while it was nascar tech and has worked for a few different shops in the area and found his nitch as a service writer instead of wrenching. But know of a guy who was a cook that got in to the mini cooper school.

I always thought the CC programs were the best way to go. I have no personal experience with either though. I don't know how much UTI costs, but CC is very affordable.

I used to work in Morresville & we were flooded with students from there looking for work. I worked at a machine shop, so it didn't directly correlate to the school, but what we learned was that if you could afford it, they'd let you in. It's crazy expensive too! I'd check a local CC for similar training for cheap. I had a friend that went to a great program at CPCC. I don't know what CVCC offers.

As a grad of NTI I personally wouldn't recommend it. While I did enjoy the school & got some hands on training it to me wasn't worth the $ unless you wanted to work on a race team. I got a ton of scholarships to NTI which made it cheaper than Community College for me, but for most it's a VERY expensive school. As others have mentioned if you stay focused & dedicated you can get into one of the MSAT programs as they are called which is a great program that can get you working on some high end cars.(Audi BMW Volvo VW Porsche). The majority of the students however do not make into the Msat programs. The instructors are hit & miss some are great, knowledgeable, and willing to teach there students to become quality techs but more often than not you have some guy that is just there for the paycheck & not much else. It has been 7 years since I graduated so things might have changed but my recommendation would be to get on has an apprentice some where & go to a CC at night.

just got back from checking out the program at CVCC in Hickory-for the money and overall it's looking like a winner. not nearly the flash and advertising that UTI throws at you, but the head of the program and a couple teachers were more than happy to share their time and show us around at the drop of a hat.

Thank you guys for sharing your input, it only reinforces this choice as being better

Now complete the cycle. Figure out where he would like to work.
Go there ask to speak to the service manager. Tell him you want to work for him, and are getting ready to g t school, what would he recommend.

Work this problem backwards, start where you want to end up, and see how to get there.

Don't waste you're money on UTI, go to a CC. I know several who graduated from there and they can't fix a damn thing unless you can tell it by a scan tool. Hell, I had to show one guy how the 4x4 on his commanche worked and essentially rebuild the front axle for him.

UTI may work for some, but it looks like a super advertising ploy geared towards ripping off naive young folks whopwant to learn to work on cars.

I've never heard any thing good about uti, I went to wyotech in pa. It was worth it to me even though it was expensive. I like being able to say I went there and liked the classes available. But a ton of guys I work with just went to GTCC, and did the GM program, I think, and they swear by it and tell me I was stupid to pay that much and go that far. It seems to me what ever program you you go through you get what you put in. I paid attention and had perfect attention and was a teachers pet if you wanna call it that. But I feel like I can fix anything I want to tear into.
