We have a large group going down in April to camp at Uwharrie for the weekend. We will be doing primitive camping.

I have camped there for years, We normally have large groups and we tend to have several bags of trash at the end of the weekend. I normally just take them home and deal with it that way. Just wondering if there is an easier way to deal with it that I am not aware of. I guess part of the issue is its normally a Sunday when we are on our way out and the centers are closed.

Just curious what others do. I have no issue hauling it back, But a few hours with a trailer full of trash sucks.

There are large dumpsters at the Arrowhead campground. There are also some smallers cans and such at the double parking lot and art lilley campground.

Arrowhead is your best bet. You have to drive all the way around the loop and it's on your right before the large building. I think it's the showers building actually.

Give Janet Becker a call, but I don't think they mind. I have her number here somewhere, but I can't seem to locate it at the moment. You can also call the FS ranger line and they can get you the info. Terry Savery would also know.

Also, you might talk to Chris Cagle at the outpost. If you tell him your from NC4x4 he may be willing to allow you to use his dumpster. He's also a member on here.

I called the ranger station and they were so shocked to hear my question. Lol Terry is out on vacation, but they said there are new dumpsters at the shooting range that can be used. They also mentioned to use the cans at each of the trail heads. (Wolf Den has a larger one.) They mentioned there will be plenty of people working this weekend so the dumpsters should be emptied on a regular basis.

As far as Arrowhead goes you can drive to camp site 22 which is Janet's camper and ask her. She lives there so she should be around to answer any questions.

On the same note if anyone sees trash on the trail just take a second to stop and pick it up. I don't want another Tellico situation!!!

Good to read a thread on this topic. We try to carry a couple trash bags in the jeep for our trash and that of others. Of course you cant police up for everyone, but when you stop for obstacles, take a few minutes to look around and pick up a few things.

Thanks Guys & Gals !!!!!!

When we stop my kids usually jump out and get bored hearing us describe the line and they pick crap up. When we go on walks through the neighborhood they do the same thing. I almost always have a bag or two in the burb and if not I tell them to just throw the crap in the back o the burb and we clean it out later.

I picked up a trash bag full today. Snappy even picked up a can that was still cold! Some people just have no freaking respect. Daniel is going to need some trash pick up attention on the next work day in addition to Dickey Bell. Can't believe there is so much trash already. This shit really burns my ass.

We ended up with 3 bags of trash. And the group that was in front of us had better be happy we couldn't find a ranger or there would have been a bunch of tickets..... I picked up 39 cans from behind on group of 5 trucks that half were still cold.... We put out 2 abanded campfires and cleaned up one camp site(this was one of our bags of trash)....
This is crazy 3 days into a season...
Good news is I got 39 tabs to turn in for a cancer patient to help with treatments!!!

Sounds like a bunch of pansi ass teenagers that cant even finish a beer..so they throw them out, so there friends will think they dunk em. What a bunch of idiots.

So where is the trash coming from? I mean three days in and its adding up already. Would you say there were more 4wds vs ATVs, I am not pointing fingers but I have been in contact with a ATV club that rides at Brown about having them get involved in trash pick up. If it makes a few of the ATVs aware of the issues than its a help.

On a side note, Burke County has or is passings a law that states you can't ride your ATV or Dirt Bike on someone else's land. For example you can't have your buddys over to ride your private land. So this is going to add allot more ATV Riders at Brown Mtn which is 10/1 4wd/ATV as it is. More riders is more trash, Like I said if I can get the ATV Clubs involved than it would be a plus, Seeing how there losing places to ride.

Are there ATV clubs that ride in Uwharrie? Or maybe contact the ATV dealers to make them aware. I considering shooting some emails to the PR people for some of the manufacturers, to get them involved. Whats it hurt.

I see most of the trash coming from 4wds actually. The ATVs don't typically carry coolers with them when they ride. Their trash is usually at their campsite. The problem I see is exactly what we saw yesterday, people who are running semi-stock rigs and are out to go "muddin" and get drunk. They drink their beers while on the trail and just toss them out or leave them sitting on the ground. The second problem is the campsites and like I said, both crowds contribute to that.

The largest problem I see from the ATVs is that there are a select few who are impatient and have no regard for marked trails. They make their own trails through the woods to avoid slower vehicles, thus destroying terrain and making bypasses.

I always toss the bag(s) on my trailer and take em home. I have weekly curbside pickup and always have room for 2-3 extra bags or put em in my neighbors bins who don't fill theirs up. (or worst case take it to the transfer station on my way to work)

Thats been what I have done in the past, But with 6 - 8 familys camping with us, it tends to be several bags at the end of the trip, I am almost always the last to leave and end up handling the trash, Which I don't mind it assures it is handled properly.

That sucks, we had just picked up several bags worth last weekend when we put up the guardrail.
