Well, that's one less problem to worry about at the Uwharrie 4x4Cross. We all know how great cell phones work out there, CB's just blow, and Nextel is a joke. Getting reliable communications out on the Uwharrie trails can be a real challenge. We tried a few different sorts of systems out there on Saturday and after a lot of discussion and testing we finally came up with a radio system that covers the whole race course like a blanket. I just wanted to give a big thanks to the crew that came out to help with the range testing and system coverage verification. I can guarantee that it wouldn't have gone nearly as quickly and smoothly as it did without your help! Here ya go guys, this ones on me.
And one more thing...Dylan W....you're a mad man! I'll take a ride with you in the muddy slop like that any day! Thanks for giving us a lift!

Mad man huh? lol Sloppy trails at URE sure are alot funnererrr
than dry ones. Thats fer sure! Had a great time ''working'' this weekend. Good to meet you guys. We have def. got the radio problems solved for the race course. Just gotta work on the big range talking now. Thanks for the help and coming out on a nasty weekend to do it.

I was'nt gonna mention it, but it seemed like(on the highway) the z-71 was getting smaller in the rear view, every time I looked....:flipoff2:

Nah I'll admit it, usually I'm a fairly slow driver :shaking:

But it seems my tendancy for slow driving is due to my constant fear of my vehicle I'm currently driving suddenly blowing up or loosing control or w/e since it seems to happen to me so often anyway :handed:

So, out of interest, what did work? Band, power level, etc?

did yall try UHF VHF w/ a repeater?

I don't want to go into too much detail for obvious reasons, but a UHF repeater set up with a 1/4 wave antenna from the Dutch John trail head covered the race course quite nicely. To save the P.A. I was only putting 20 watts out of the duplexer. On race day it's going to move about 250' up to one of the mountain tops and it'll be sporting an 8db gain antenna as well, so coverage will be kick ass.

I would think you'd rather keep a 1/4 wave antenna vs. moving to a gain, just to prevent it from becoming more directional...

I know exactly what you mean. We'd still like to push the coverage envelope out just a bit more to cover the entire property including the camp grounds, thus the gain antenna. Something like a 3db gain omni may ultimately be a better choice due to it's better pattern. Heck, once we move it up the mountain the unity gain 1/4 wave may do the trick. 250' is a big elevation difference.
